truck shopping
Looking for opinions on trucks. I looked at all three and really like all three. I currently have a 2003 Dodge 3/4 ton diesel. I travel allot for work, so i am looking for a better ride and want to go back to a gas engine. I tow very little, and not very far but when I do I tow a Formula 311 I would guess on trailer 9500-9800 lbs.
Here are the 3 trucks I am looking at - (in the order i like them most to least)
1. Chevy 1/2 HD 6.0 with 4.10 gears and 4 speed trans.
2. Ford F-250 5.4 liter 3.73 gears (i think 5 speed trans.?)
3. Chevy 3/4 ton 6.0 with 3.73 gears 6 speed trans.

The 6spd would be the new auto right? That would probably be the best of the 3 choices, which I would rank in the same order listed. But everybody's gonna tell you to be prepared for "torque shock" when you feel how much weaker the gasser is than you're current diesel.
If you've got any highway/hills/mountains in your tow route, you'll be disappointed. You'll get it done, but it'll be slower and you'll need to spin any of those motors at least 4k rpm to get up a grade with the 311. But at least they like to run there, so it's not that bad.
One other decision factor would be the active fuel management or whatever they call it; the system that shuts down cylinders at light loads. If only one of those Chevys offers it, you might lean that way depending on what you're work travel entails.
Or you could just save a ton of coin and make the dodge ride better.
good luck, let us know what you end up with and how it works.

You need a 3/4 ton for that boat.
So the Chevy is the better choice. The 5.4 Ford engine in an F 250 won't cut it IMHO.
The 6 speed means that is a 2007/8 new body style-correct?
Wannabe

yes, it is a new truck i am looking at. I am leaning towards the 1/2 ton because it has the high tow capacity of 10,500 (higher than the 3/4 ton with 3.73)

I would look at the new 6.4L diesel in the Ford Super Duty. Even though you said you didn't want a diesel engine, people have said it's so smooth and quiet they wouldn't know it was a diesel if it didn't say so on the side of the truck.
That's a lot of weight for a gas engine. You definitely want at least a 3/4 ton truck.

Never liked the old GM 6.0 . I would look into the new GM's .
I have a couple Ford F-250s with the 5.4 (4.10) and they tow surprisingly well . Also a couple Ford V10s they have the power but are pigs on fuel . But I would have troubles going back to a gasser . I drive an F250 Harley with the 6.0 Diesel as my daily driver 40k a year and love it .
