I had a 2004 6.0 diesel excursion. Before I did any modifications I was getting just over 14 mpg. I traded it in on a 2008 6.4 diesel f450. I am getting 12 mpg on exactly the same daily routes, traffic, driving conditions and driving style. The excursion had 3.73 rearend gears while the f450 has 4.88 with the heavy duty tow package. The f450 is a much better vehicle. The turning radius is excellent, the ride is smooth, and the motor is dramatically quieter. For towing, it is excellent. It has commercial tires which is alone much safer than e rated tires. Every other important component for towing has been upgraded compared to previous models. I think the gas motor would have trouble pulling heavy loads and would do MUCH worse on fuel economy, especially with the 4.88 rearend which is necessary for safe heavy towing.

Just a question why are some of you giving numbers on a 450 when he asked about a 250? Are the two going to get the same mpg? I thought the 450 would use more???

I would say the 4.88's are whats killing the 450's if I had one I would put one of these on http://www.gearvendors.com/index.html

Sorry, I read one of the entries about a 450. I didn't realize the original question in the thread was about the f250. Having said that, I have a friend with a 2008 f250 and his doesn't do much better than mine (but he is a bit of a lead foot). I think my truck is getting better than most with the same rear but I have confirmed the computer readings by calculating it and it is 12.3 to 12.5 mpg.

Why have this forum if we're not gonna put truck and trailer topics in it?

Get the diesel. The v-10 is on it's way out in the next year or two. I had a 250 v-10 in 07 & could not get better than 11 mpg on the highway (not towing anything) with the cruise on. I got a 08 350 dually this year & the same trip it gets about 2 or 3 mpg better but I have 4.30 gears. I have a 450 coming for 08. I would get a diesel in your shoes or what for the gas engine it might be good based of of the info I got through a connection I have in Ford.

I just took delivery of my new V10 F250 from OSO member Mat Raymond of Sanders Ford. I'm SO happy to be rid of my diesel, no more stink, vibration, outrageous repair bills, and not to mention saving $6k or so on the invoice. Ford has had issues with the 6.0 and are having some with the 6.4 now, in a couple of years they'll be building their own diesel so the 6.4 won't have too much of a run. The 6.4s are much quieter and smoother than my old 7.3 but you have to ask yourself if the $6k & higher fuel prices are worth it. If you tow a lot then 6.4 for sure. However, I couldn't justify the price difference and added fuel cost, I only tow a 33' PowerPlay short distances, the V10 with the 4.10s make easy work of it. The V10 is quick/responsive, quiet, and the front end isn't carrying around the additional 400lbs for the diesel which makes driving much nicer. This truck is also my daily driver so it was an easy decision.

Spend some time over at the Ford-Truck Enthusiasts forum, here's a thread to get you started. Also look at the 6.4 forum there, it's not all a bed of roses on the diesel forums as some might lead you to think. As far as Chevy/Dodge goes, I just don't like their trucks for various reasons, and I've owned plenty of all three manufacturers.

Ha I thought the same thing!

03 Duramax CC 2500 2WD with a new waterpump as the sole repair after 107K miles. Still has factory brakes!
