I have never put grease on any of my hitch balls... I tow a 14,000lb equpment trailer on a ball all the time, no squeeking or metal shavings. I also use a pintle on my 20,000lb trailer, now that one makes some metal shavings..

Why do they grease 5th wheels?
Mine is greased, won't hurt to do it, get a trailer ball cover to slide over when you're around it. My hitch is removed when back home anyway.

I never grease the ball and never have any shavings. I use a solid ball and have no problems. The only thing is that if you don't use it, in about a month you will get a little surface rust on it. That comes right off when you tow the next trailer
