With a 3500 dodge dually. If you use it for daily driving and towing onthe weekends and don't abuse the transmission will it last or do they all have tranny problems? What fails in the transmission?

LBZ and LLY are basically the same... my 2006 SRW 2500 crew LLY shorty was built last day of LLY production in late Sept 05 and it has a LBZ computer, in fact last 3 months of LLY production got LBZ boxes it seems... they ALL smoked when new... with the Diablo box set on 65hp it will pull ANYTHING it's hooked to... I have had 2 EGR's fail and 3 intermediate steering shafts swapped.. other than that it's been great.

Im not one to brag on things I have but, I just completed a road trip to Maryland ( im from Kansas City KS) to pick up a boat my friend bought. I own a 06 GMC 3/4 ton, 4WD, duramax, crew cab and I was throughly impressed with the performance of the truck. It almost has 100,000 miles on it and the ride couldnt have been better ( minus the roads in Indiana - they sucked ) Im checking the fuel mileage this week, Ill let you know what it came out to be. Ill prolly drive this truck until the bed falls off, my 2 cents

The automatic transmission on the 5.9 is just an old 727 torqueflight with a over drive unit added to it. It is a light duty transmission at best and old school tech, like old school fron the 60's tech. It will fail with regular towing unless you keep it very cool and take it very easy. A aftermarket tranny from ATS or Suncoast will help, but still constrained by the original design. You can take a aftermarket allison from ATS and throw 1000hp and 2000ft/lb at it and it will survive, the aftermarket dodge will take less then half that. Now this is only for the auto behind the 5.9, the new Orion behind the 6.7 is far improved, a blatant knockoff of the allison as I understand it, but I would not buy a 6.7 cummins if it were me. The 6 speed behind the cummins is a different story, it is a great tranny, as long as you dont mind shifting. They are touble free and tough as nails, believe it is a new venture 5600. The 5.9 and 5600 combo will yield you the best mileage in a 3/4 or 1 ton truck out there if driven nicely. Many report 23-25 mpg unloaded with this combo, if you want a Dodge this is the only way to go, as I said 06 Dmax with allison, or 05-06 dodge megacab with 6-speed.

all 06' duramax's have 6 spd autos,,if you have a earlier year allison you can get a kit to make it a 6spd,,all 06' duramax trucks got the 32 bit computers and the separate tranny computers,,the lly engines were run till sept/oct 05' because gm couldn't finish epa test in time, lly and lbz engines are the same upgraded engines with the lbz making more hp and torque,,there are 06' vans with duramax engines with less power too, because of there using 4l85 trannys

NV5600 is behind 2000-2004.5 5.9 CUMMINS. 2004.5 (late year) thru current is G-56 and has issues with breaking gears. Also, stay away from any auto in a 5.9 cummins. Its just a ticking timebomb. I have an 03 5.9 6spd that has been trouble free fro 97000 miles.
