Trailer Winch Rating
I have a 1990 Chris Craft 245 LTD on a really old crappy trailer.
The boat / trailer JUST fit in the garage under the house (by less than 2")
I am looking at fixing up the trailer since the boat is in great shape and I'd like to take it other places, rather than the 1 mile to the lake...
the brakes are shot, the axles make all sorts of noises, there are no lights on it at all... and the surge thing for the brakes I'm fairly sure doesn't come close to working.
Well last Sunday I went to pull the boat out, and my new tahoe's hitch is apparently way higher than my old tahoe's (1995 to a 2009)... the air suspension thinks that it needs to level the truck on the boat ramp and puts the hitch 10 feet off the ground... ok, no problem, so back the truck in rather deep... well... problem the boat struck the bumper piece above the winch and destroyed it... so I need a new one of those too.
I plan to fix up the trailer in stages.
1. new winch + bumpers in the front.
My question to you guys: what size winch do I need?
The boat is (best guess 5,000+ lbs loaded with fuel + gear)
I want to go to the newer nylon winchs / lines I don't like the steel one that's on it. The rope is shot and the ratchet thing is also shot....
so, do I need a 3,000 lb winch? 4,000? 6,000?
thanks...
stage 2 will be painting it black to match the new truck...
stage 3 will be new axles / brakes
stage 4 will be all new LED lighting / fenders
ohh and it's missing a fender... the girl friend took it off while going around the launch.....

You got this backwards.
Stage 1- replace axles/brakes- do electric brakes, replace spindles and bearings.
Stage 2- wiring
Stage 3 winch- 4000 lbs should do
stage 4 paint

brakes
my dad was thinking electric brakes as well.
my tahoe has an integrated brake controller too.
so 4,000 lbs?
The trailer / brakes have been shot now for 10+ years, it's only trailered 1 mile to / from launch site...
I'm more worried about the cable / winch than anything else.
where's a good place to get said winch?
thanks!
