brakerite e o h question
Just picked up my new/used boat yesterday.the trailer has a Brakerite EOH and Tekonsha controller in truck. When I left for the trip back home there was about a 2 second delay in brake force and I had to have the controller timing turned all the way up and output all the way up. At the end of my 450 mile trip, the delay was like 8 seconds!!! once they started to work if you repeatedly hit the brake pedal there would be no delay. only once you let off the brake for about 10 seconds the delay would come right back. the pump would work instantly but no brake pressure. It also had a delay on the sellers truck so it seemed to be normal at the time i left. I'm new to eoh but not to the brake world. any ideas? thanks
Oh Ya, its an Extreme Custom traler w/trip axle and trip brakes

I would check to make sure the controler worked with EoH breaks first of all. Then I would check to make sure the fluid level was what is was supposed to be and that you bleed the breaks. Make sure you dont have an air issue. The other thing that you may look into is the batteries. As my batteries got older on my Brakerite system it would take a few miles and a few times to hit the breaks for them to start working properly or so it seemed. When they work correctly you wont want to pull a trailer without EoH braking capacity.

I never could get my Tekensha (sp?) controller to work with my EOH brakes. Bought the MaxBrake controller. Best money ever spent on the boat that made the most difference. Works off your trucks brake line press, not momentum. The harder you push the pedal, the harder the trailer brakes come on. Plus you have trailer brakes while backing down the ramp. No more front tires skidding. No fear of the trailer pushing you thru an intersection on wet pavement either. It is a little costly compared to the rest of the regular controllers., because it's worth it.
Several guys use the P3 controller and claim good results. The cheap $50 units won't cut it.

Whats wierd is that it does have great brakes when backing up..... seems like when going slow and keeping your foot on the brake longer the brake system is great. Like I said before the brake actuator/pump comes on instantainious when the brakes are applied or the override is used.Just a slow build up of pressure. From what I have learned the Tekonsha controllers are not the $50 cheapo's they sell at a crappy part stores. It was bought at a reputable trailer distibuter in town.Its definetly not the $350 Maxbrake one but has always worked perfect in all other situatiuons and trailers w/ electric brakes. I guess the cheapest way would be inspect all axle brakes for leaks and bleed system. if no better, try a cheaper P3 before gong to a maxbrake.

If I'm not mistaken, the pump will get a signal to start up as soon as the brakelite switch has been activated to start up the unit for normal braking. By this I mean split seconds. I think that is to help to eliminate the delay. This would go along with your findings of going slow, forward or reverse, or riding with your foot on the brake pedal. There is no momentium condition a that point, so the unit is getting a lower startup voltage. I 'think', been awhile, the Tek controller uses an accelerometer to vary the output voltage.
Some brake controllers have an electric setting and EOH setting. Appearantly they work just a bit different to warrant the 2 settings??
I may be way off here, but it seems I recall this to be how the regular controllers work

It could be the Prodigy model. I bought one several years ago and the documentation said not to use it EOH.
See if you can find out what model you have.

its a Tek Voyager. anciant I know. I will look up specs if I can find them to see if its eoh compatable. but remember, if I use the override there is still a 8 second delay than wammo!!! brakes will send you through the dash. use again quicklt and no delay. if I turn down the output than the brakes will work properly (not hit so hard) but still have the delay. I'm thinking its the pump but will try another controller first.

if you have both numbers maxed out, that is the problem. One number is the delay side and the higher the number the longer the delay. On mine the left knob is the delay. try turning one of the knobs back the other way and see if it helps.
