I had a 06 F-350 DRW,that I picked up new. It had the 4.10 rear end, got about 12-13 mpg empty, towing the boat got 11-11.5. Got rid of it for an 08 F-450, but it had an 4.88 gear in er. Got about 8-8.5 mpg avg, and 7.8-8.0 towing the boat. TERRIBLE !!! Wished I'd have never got rid of the 06 350.

Just picked up another 06 F-350 DRW 4X4, with the 4.10 gear, in "MINT" condition. Over the whole truck, I've only found 3 little nicks about the size of a BB or smaller. Interior still smells new, tires are almost new, the bed has only a few scratches in it. This one does'nt have the moonroof tho, my other ones did. Oh well. The truck is averaging 14.5 mpg's, but I still hav'nt towed anything yet.
Got it through a truck dealer, and they verified all the work that was ever done to it. Never in an accident, with a perfect carfax report. Previous owner passed away last year. Truck had just over 100K all highway miles on it. Got a dealer full warranty for the complete driveline 5 yr./100K mile, with a $100 deductible each time I bring it in. Paid $21,400. and another $1200. for the warranty. So, the whole drive train is under warranty for just over 200K miles. Just love this truck, it's a kinda rare color, it's called Arizona sandstone, it's a couple shades darker than my pewter colored suburban. Truck is stone stock, and I'm thinking about doing the EGR delete, and maybe the 4" exhaust to pick up on some fuel mileage. IDK, just thinking about it, but the only time I'll be driving it will be towing the enclosed trailer to the drag strip a dozen times a year, or towing the boat (15 miles) to the harbor a dozen times a summer. Don't know if it'd be worth the extra $$$ or if it'd screw up my warranty.

Ok all this talk about DRW ver SWR got me thinking. First, I am not talking just my 32 I may want to move up in the future.

Towing weight Convential weight distributing
F250/F350SRW-12,500
F350DRW-15,000
If we stay with a fountain, that looks to me the difference between being able to Safely pull a 42 over a 35-38.

I did the math, this assumes worst case, as a example 5 m.p.g. difference, $5 per gallon deisel (That's what I was paying in 08), and that I would be driving this every day back and forth to work, 52 weeks per year.
  • Round trip to work, gym, home 21 miles per day.
  • 105 miles per week.
  • 5,460 miles per year.
  • 364 gallons of fuel per year. I used 15 m.p.g. for a DRW.
  • $1820 dollars per year at $5.00 per gallon.
  • 273 gallons per year for a SWR if I assume 20 m.p.g.
  • $1365 per year for SRW
  • $455 per year difference.

I know of course tires would be more, the SRW would ride better, (The 06 rides a heck of a lot better then my current SRW).

So more capacity, safer if a tire blows, for $455 per year. Just thinking, I have plenty of time, not in a hurry.

BTW Thanks fountain 4402 for the data.

One thing, does anyone know if the brakes are different between the 250 350 SRW?
350 SWR DRW?
For me that is as important as going.

I have an 06 F350 SRW long bed 4x4 4 door King Ranch 6.0 w/stock 20" rims with the 3.73

My father-in-law had a 06 F350 DRW 4x4 4 door King Ranch 6.0 w/stock 18" rims with the 4.10

We both agreed that my SRW was a much easier truck to drive. Can't argue that a DRW will be more stable when towing, but if going to be a daily/semi-daily driver the SRW is a much better route to go. I just put some Toyo's on my truck and the ride is 10x better than the stock tires.

I see around 16MPG with no mods. I want to do the EGR bypass but haven't got around to it. His ran like 12MPG IIRC.

I have 92K miles so I think the stud thing is out of warranty?

Funny- he sold his 06 in early 09 with 22K miles for $20K. I thought about buying it as a spare, I should have!

Yea I don't see any at that price, unless they have more miles and older. I have still been looking and dealers want high 20's and a lot of times that's cloth interior.

Hey Tinman, you said yours gets 16 mpg, what gear ratio?

This may all be mute at this point, I don't see this truck for sale anymore.

What is the real on trailer (ALM) weight of a staggard 35 or staggard 38?

a twin 2000 35 Lightning is 8400 dry just the boat. I would add 1500-2000 for a steel trailer. a twin 38 same year is 8500 dry.

a 2000 42 weighs in at 9400 dry.

All of this according to Nada. So if you get a 42 some day with fuel add another 1000 lbs and a 3000lbs trailer youll be at the brink of an 06 350DRW
