Someone told Icdedppl today that the 8.1 truck wont have enough power to pull his boat up the ramp, and will be doing 35mph in the right lane on the highway??

So what did everyone tow 38 cigs and other big offshores with back in the 80's or 90's, before the monster diesels were around?
I said this EXACT thing to my roommate the other day. I have a 91 32 Thunder and pull it with a 6.5. All day long I get told its not going to pull up a ramp or whatever. Then I proceed to say, What do you think pulled them in 1991? This exact truck... Sorry, Hijacked a little.

Ive wanted to find an 8.1 for quite sometime but they are rare. Good luck.

If were gonna argue about anything we should start with 3.73 vs. 4.10 !

I have a 2001 3500 crew, 8.1, Allison trans, 4x4 loaded with 41,000 miles. I bought it new and thought about selling it until I looked for 1 for sale to estimate its value. Yes they are hard to find and hold their value. I was considering a 2010 Duramax (pre emissions) loaded up because of the GPS/Back up camera option but I think I will just go aftermaket for the options mine is missing. My 8.1 gets 12-13 MPG highway and 7-8 towing the big cat.

Lets looks at the Allison trans. Heres the ratios on the 2006 and newer (6th gear added)

1st=3.10=12.7:1 x 450FT lbs (stock 8.1)=5715FT lbs

2nd=1.81=7.42 x 450=3339ft lbs

3rd=1.41=5.78x 450=2601 ft lbs

4th=1.00=4.10x450=1845ft lbs

5th=.71=2.91x450=1309ft lbs

6th=.61=2.50x450=1125ft lbs

Now, lets compare that to the trans in your excursion Dan.

1ST=2.71x3.73=10.10 x525ft lbs(stock 7.3)=5302

2ND=1.54x3.37=5.74x525=3013

3RD=1.00=x3.73=3.73x525=1958

4TH=.71=2.65x525=1391 ft lbs

Of course tire diameter plays a effect on the overall ratio, but my point is, theres so much more to towing power, than just engine output. In the big truck world of semi's, you can take a semi tractor with lets say a 500HP Cat. Stick a standard 10spd fuller trans behind it, with a 3.55 ratio, and compare it to the same truck, but with a smaller 430hp cat, 18spd, 4.30 ratio setup. The 18spd 4.30 ratio truck will pull heavy loads up mountain passes all day, while the 500HP 10spd truck will be hurtin. Its all in the gears man. Max torque to the rear wheels is what gets the load moving. I'd take a 250HP diesel with the right drivetrain over a 300HP diesel with the wrong drivetrain any day.

If you had a 4.10 truck, with 29" tall tires, and desired the cruising rpm of a 3.73, than switching to a 32" tall tire will get you close.
