My 09 Silverado 1500 crew cab LT 2wd with a 5.3 and a six speed gets an average of 17mpg.
To verify that number, I got the gallons of fuel used number from my speedo (6067) and divided it into my mileage(104,070) which gives me 17.15mpg average.
80% of that mileage was 75mph between Baton Rouge and Tampa Fla., so no real hills or mountains.
Half of the trips had a pretty good load in the bed of the truck (500#).
It does well hauling my boat (26' Stinger), and is comfortable to drive (I'm 6'2" 275)
Only problems I've had are replacement of the vapor recovery valves and one of the door lock solenoids.
I would buy another one.
(I know I know, TMI and too many parenthesis)

Odd part is I have the same truck, same motor, same year but 2WD and I can't get better than 14-16 empty (no trailer/ no weight in the truck) at 75 mph......drop to 55-60 and it gets 18-19 empty. I bought the truck new, has 31K miles on it now. Regular around town is 12.6ish which is about the same as a 1500 5.3 GMC.

You can quit saying "all" GM trucks are built in Mexico, that is 1 of 3 plants. So about 2/3 are built in either Flint or Indiana. For a while though 1500 CC's were only done in Silao, before you say "every one you looked at" was made there.

2500/3500's with diesels are all made in Flint, MI from what I have seen on the lots.

Have a 2011 Ecoboost with 59,000 miles. Averaging about 19mpg with a good amount of highway driving in that #. Just towed around about 7500lbs this past weekend about 800 miles. 11.5 average MPG for the trip. That is not a heavy rig but it tows very well and has torque that feels similar to a diesel. To put it a better way the torque feels more like a diesel than a gas engine. Have had 250 diesels, 4.6s, and 5.4s in F150s. At 75 MPH, RPMs were around 2100 and it would only down shift on larger grades one gear and be at about 2400 RPMs. The largest grades would pull it down another gear to about 3000 RPMs. It maintained 75 on the grades.
I used to hate the down shifts that sent the engine RPM to around 4000. Used to turn off the cruise to avoid it. I left cruise on the entire trip with the ecoboost.
The trip was from NJ to Atlanta and I was not in mountains. My 4.6s and 5.4s would have shifted again to nearly 4000 RPM and not held speeds. My 6.0 Diesels would have held speeds even in the mountains.
Some good discussion on here and I thought some #s and towing thoughts might be useful
I overall feel I picked up 1.5 MPG over my last 5.4 and 4.6 engines which I am happy with.

I am a GM fan but currently own the ECO Boost. Owned two F250 power strokes prior to the Eco. I really am GM loyal but with cost of fuel and the economy brand loyalty went out the window, my 07 silverado was junk. Now I am not one of those guys that says after one bad vehicle or know a buddies buddy whos truck is always in the shop. Next year I will be looking for a new truck potentially and will shop all American brands. But really has my eye is the new Ram 1/2 ton diesel that will be coming out.
Chevy advertises they are the leader in the MPG but their claim is 1MPG on the HWY, and its to soon to get real world. With 3.73 gears extended cab stn box I am getting 16.7 AVG and 21HWY with the truck, which from everything I have seen is what everybody is getting. I tow a 29 fountain and have seen up to 13mpg towing. Great truck no complaints. Another thing with the chevy and the 11,500 towing, by the time you add 4WD and crew cab its down to 11,200 which is actually less than ECO, only way to get 11,500 is with 2WD and. Manufactures like to do these gimics Ford does it too, before buying something I would suggest building to the way you want then checking the capabilites.
Hate to say the ECO tows like diesel because thats bit exagerting, but at the same time it does, guys with them will know what Im talking about. The difference is there is no torque curve because of the turbos you get all 420lbs of torque at 2500rpm with this truck, really makes for a unique and quality towing experience. And to be honest with you I was going to buy a 2014 Chevy, but Chevy kind of let me down in looks and engine. Great looking truck but over styling change was minimal, but the interior got a serious make over which it needed. But I really was hoping for a turbod engine from chevy, but all they offered was a new 5.3l which merely competes with eco and still has less HP and Torque. I was thinking the GM 4.3L could have made a monster turbod engine. But from what insiders I have talked(engineers) everybody at GM wanted either a diesel or turbo gas engine, but bean counters killed the deal and thats all I was told, but from the expressions the guy made it was messy debate.
