my grand Cherokee just ate a piston. nice little truck, but it complains when I haul 6500 lbs to the shore. (cops could complain too!) I drive around fixing copiers, so I need a decent size SUV to fill with parts during the week that is usable for weekend boating. purchase price, fuel mileage, durability...I am not thinking new.

Actually that is a great vehicle- Find a low mileage Envoy or Traiblazer from the 2005 on and they get 17-19 mpg around town.

We have a 2002 here in florida with 170k miles. It won't die.

Lots of choices. Two of interest. Motor Trend just tested the new Dodge 1500 diesel powered. They got 28 highway m.p.g. 240 h.p. 420 ft# torque. Tows 7200-9000 depending on truck style and gearing.
I have two friends with EcoBoost Ford F150s. Highway mileage in the lower 20s (but they will run on reg. if you aren't towing heavy) and they accelerate like 60s Muscle Cars! The new Chevs have
the hi-tech LS motors that run on 4 cylinders under light loads. Have another friend that owns a Tundra. Very nice truck, powerful, but not as easy on gas as the "Big 3." Someone else already
suggested driving them all and looking for a great deal. Sound advice.

Get a truck and put a cab height shell on it. A.R.E. makes several with great lines that give it an SUV look.
Significantly more room than an SUV and less cargo noise / smell, auto locking rear glass wired to locks so it is easy as the same button push as getting into the truck.

Driving for sure.

You are not going to tow anything close to 6k with a gasser let alone a diesel and expect to average 15 mpg at highway speeds.
(don't mean to start a flame war, just the general facts. Yes, there is always that one "unique" individual that claims amazing mileage but experience of the masses is overwhelming)
