I know this will sound arrogant from a member with 1 or two posts, but steer clear of any diesel truck 2008 or newer with a diesel particulate filter, any 6.0L of 6.4L Ford and LB7 Duramax trucks and any truck you dont know the history of. I own Dominator Diesel in Massachusetts and have worked on them all. They all have the ability to cost their owners $10,000 + in the blink of an eye. The fuel systems operate at 25,000 psi+ and wear components out faster then earlier trucks. They are overly sensitive to any type of contamination in the fuel and parts are expensive with no guarantee they wont wear out again. I could go on for paragraphs about the specifics but I see at least one guy a week that got rolled on what he thought was a good deal. Most mechanics can neither properly diagnose or repair the issues to the quality level that is required for a long term repair due to lack of correct tools, diagnostic sources and quality parts suppliers. I drive a 2003 Dodge Cummins 6 speed stick truck with 280K because I like it and it's paid off, but I spend plenty of my own time and money keeping it in good shape and going over the top with maintenance. Feel free to PM me if you need any information.

Driving old tech and *****ing about new tech just makes you another grumpy old fart, I'm one so I know.

Except he's 34 and witnesses the downside to the new tech everyday. Not scared of technology, just scared of paying to fix it!

There's no doubt that EPA regulations combined with the battle to be top dog with the hp/torque numbers has made the newer diesels something different than the old days. Now we have DPF, Urea injection, super high pressures, lots of heat, computers, etc. It is definitely something to think about when buying one because repairs can be outrageous!

I don't know if I'd buy an 8 year old truck with 300,00+ miles on it myself............BUT,
I bought my 2011 GMC denali ccdrw in late 2012 with 30K on it, in the height of the diesel fuel prices...paid $45K (a steal) already had dpf delete, black maxx, b&w hitch, exhaust, etc.. Now just over 4 years later, she has taken me to the four corners of the USA multiple times, had 4-23,000 lbs behind her about 50% of that or more, and will turn over 200,000 next week when I go to NC to pick up my new center console. In all that time and mileage all I have done is change oil every 7500 miles, fuel filter every 25,000 miles, and I'm just into my 3rd set of michelins. The TCM went out about 116K. She has NEVER left me stranded on the side of the road, still has the original brakes, shocks, ball joints, etc...
Yes it needs new shocks and brakes about now, but I see myself driving this truck to at least 400k before I sell it and get something with less mileage. I don't know if I'll get a newer one, or just one with lower mileage (do love the looks of the 2015 and up) but the next truck will without a doubt be another duramax. I have had several fords and a dodge, and they just don't compare longevity wise. Maybe I just got lucky, but this has been the most reliable, most comfortable, best fuel economy, most powerful truck I've ever had and now I'm a duramax believer too.
Good luck with your search finding the right truck for you!!!

I just pulled the trigger on a 2004 GMC 2500 Club Cab 4x4 Duramax Diesel Allison 5 speed automatic with 171K. The body looks and interior looks like it came out of the box - excellent shape and clean - Non-smoker. I looked underneath the vehicle and most of it was very dry- heck for a 12+ year old truck a little weeping here and there would be normal. I drove it home a (over 120 miles at 70 mph and it was terrific- 21 mpg. I'm having my mechanic change all the fluids etc. Now the only concern that I have is the transmission fluid was dark -- DIDN'T SMELL BURNED or anything like that - shifting and 4 wheel drive were all perfect. I got this for 17K out the door taxes included. For sure it will need new tires - It has some pretty bad aggressive thread almost bald tires -- the amount of noise is horrible. Yesterday AM it started right up - it has been cold in northern Indiana - No Smoke of any kind coming out of the exhaust
