general info
hi guys I have a 28 foot imp viper 454 nice boat but looking to upgrade looking at sonic baja and velocity saw the vr1 on TV once amazing the speed out of a single 496 ho my question is out of non steeped hulls what is the advantage to the velocity it seems to me its definitely lighter is that the speed advantage and it seems that velocity always sets speed record but never wins the races i wonder is that a weight issue just got my info from velocity on lineup seems like nice boat but confused I will be in NJ bay most of the time at water gets ruff not looking for fastest boat just fast enough with good ruff water control thanks for any input

Re: general info
The biggest advantage to the Velocity is the hull design with the pad bottom and notched transom. The reason they don't win more races is that they concentrate more on the speed records than on winning individual races. Steve Stepp, the owner feels that speed records are more significant, and a better indicator of a superior design. Hope this helps.

I expect you're referring to the Barnegat Bay which I've also boated in for many years. No doubt the bay gets snotty in the late afternoon! The VR1 and 290SC (same hull) are good "rough water Velocities" that should ride comparable in the bay to the other single engine boats you mention. Definitely consider the Velocity for the Bay - you'll have a boat capable of passing the others in most any condition and given my experience and observations, it's construction will hold up better over time.
I believe that there's a VR1 owner in NJ that Velocity probably could connect you to speak with.

Re: general info
I have been running a VR-1 for the past year and almost 150hrs. Last weekend on Biscayne Bay there was 2 foot wind-blown chop due to 15 knot winds as well as the thousands of boats that were in and around the Columbus Day regatta. I found that a 60 mph cruise was comfortable with the use of the trim tabs. The hull design has a sharp V entry on the bow so for rough water all you need is a little trim tab to "cut" through the rough stuff. When the conditions calm down, simply pull the tabs up and you are running on the "pad" and can easily outrun any other similarly powered and sized boat.
I am sure that there are other boats that would be better for rough water (Pantera), but I don't have much interest in taking a 28' single engine boat in 6 foot seas on a regular basis. I feel that the VR-1 hull is a nice compromise between rougn water handling, top speed, and cruise ride.

Re: general info
I was fortunate enough this past tuesday afternoon to trial run the new 290SC with the 525 and ITS and standoff box. I hit the rev limiter at the top end. Could use a little more cup in the prop. But Damn this boat is fast. It is by now in the boat show in Maryland. This family sport cruiser with full cabin, enclosed head, DVD, Flatscreen, etc, ran just shy of 85 on lake norman. (Half a tank of fuel, and 3 big people). I feel sure when it is dialed in perfect it will be another 2 or 3 mph faster. This is one heck of a boat. I was also impressed with CA's VRI when I rode in it back in July. These boats handle the rough water real well.

The cabin head room is 58" in the SC and 52" in the VR1. They're working on getting some new dealers set up, so I'm not sure where the closest one would be. Call Kenny at the factory [407-321-1340], they'll deal with you!

Re: general info
automan, I have boated in the Barnegat bay all of my life. WHen I ran my 22 Velocity O/B when I was heading home from Party Island in the afternoon I would have 4-6 people in the boat and always find an Outlaw or Scarab to race and my boat would skip across the tops of the waves like a rock and the other boats with there big HP and 2-3 more ft would be chine walking and porpoising trying to keep up with me. In my opinion a Velocity is the perfect boat for Barnegat! I guess that is why I bought a 26 T Bred (280 Velocity), however work and other projects have kept me from using it. I keep my boat at a friend's house in Croydon, if you want I can meet you down there and you can check it out in person. Mine is a 92 but they haven't changed much over the years. Let me know!

I like the sounds of that 29sc 80 ish would be nice single engine what you think this boat could be bought for new ? Sounds like fuel consumption would be much better than twins and still keep the speed what you think i know its 525 but still should be better

We have an 05 290 with a 525 in it.Fuel consumption is pretty good. The boat cruises 53 mph at 3500 rpm.All around running between 50 to 70 averages 12 to 15 gallons per hour.Top end is at 82 with a 27 px5 Hydro prop. The enclosed head, and flat screen tv,dvd are pretty sweet too.
