Do you have MerCruiser power with SmartCraft gages? If so, you already have most of what you need for depth, if not all. You may need to install a sensor. Existing gages will read depth if software is set up or you can add a gage by just plugging it in to the chain. If not, there are transom mounted sensors for use with Garmin among others.

That would be awesome if your electronics were already rigged for it. I'm having one installed at the local dealer on an older boat. I have never seen one mounted with the through hull transducer. Are there any problems with this? Any drag?

As far as which ones are better, I don't know other than the mechanic said the hummingbird brand depth sounder is crap.
