|This legend in Powerboat Performance with superior ride and Handling has been in Dealer Inventory of Coleman High Performance Marine dba Cougar Powerboats of Florida and never titled or registered to a buyer. The probability exist that the boat would be or could be titled as a current year. A new boat, this size and style with this same 700 HP HD-Dart Engines, SSM #4 Speedster Drives - Bam 1,300 HP Transmissions- Gaffrig Gages and Controls. Etc., in a brand of boat like Cigarette, Outerlimits or Statement would carry a current price tag between $500,000.00 and $750,000.00 whereas the asking price of this vintage US-1-38 is only $109,985.00 as is or $134,985.00 with certified freshened engines, new clearcoat and new cockpit cover. The price includes a Tri-axel Aluminum Trailer with new wheels springs etc.
This US-1-38 vessel is a rare classic From Cougar Holdings Ltd- of England. The Cougar Superior Offshore boat line that was designed and built with race-proven technology in a pleasureboat version. The forerunner for the Cougar US-1 line was the Cougar built Aluminum MerCruiser Special that held the World Superboat Title From 1983-1985. The US-1 Kevlar line included a 46’, 41’ 38’ & 33’, all designed and built with the Cougar Race Proven V-Pad Bottom. If These British Built Boats were British Automobiles they would be Rolls Royce, Bentley or Aston Martin. If They were Italian they would be Ferrari or Lamborghini.
Powerboat Magazine the world's leading performance boating magazine and its Founder Bob Nordskog inspected tested this very Boat in 1989 and stated “ This boat in intended for offshore use. This is one of the best rigged boats our team had ever laid eyes on.” In addition the test included impressive statements from Bob Toque who still operates Teague Marine and is a highly recognizes name and brand in performance boats today. Powerboat Magazine designated this very US-1- 38 Cougar with the Powerboat of the Year “Outstanding Offshore Workmanship” Award. If you would like to read 5 pages of Powerboat Magazine Article on this US-1-38 Cougar email me and ask for a copy [email protected] or call me Kelly Coleman @ 727-403-8690 you will also recognize my name referenced by Bob Nordskog and the Powerbost Staff throughout this Powerboat Magazine article.
Cougar Designed this boat with an average of 25%more weight to cut the waves not bounce over the waves like a very light boats and to excel above the competition for superior blue water ride, A superior ride in smooth and rough water which Cougar achieved with its 9’ Beam, Kevlar Hull and Race Proven V-Pad Bottom. Most brands of this type of Offshore Boat are narrower beam at 7’6” or 8’ as opposed to 9’. In addition many brands claim their boats are longer than they actually are if you measure them you will routinely find that many claimed lengths include the drives and/or Dive Platforms.
Please see a overhead distance photo below with this US-1-38 Cougar parked beside a 30’ scarab. The scarab is dwarfed by the Cougar, similarly, I parked a claimed 38 Sonic beside this Cougar and be amazed at the difference in size and width. The point being this heavier, wider boat with the Race Proven V-Pad Bottom does not rock side to side like a full V bottom hull., especially, a narrower V bottom with no pad bottom. The Photo referenced achieves one other important distinction of long length. Because of its width and debt a US-1-38 Cougar typically looks squatty in photographs unless it is a photo taken at a side photo taken at a distance or an overhead photo.
Is the US-1 Cougar line still available NO! It fell victim to the 1990 boat builders crisis that caused a 70% drop in 1991 sales of Luxury boats due to the 90’s Recession, the Gulf War in Kuwait and the 10% Luxury tax on boats above 100K. Cougar was sold in early to mid 1990’s but the new owners could not make Cougar Survive and went into receivership in 1996 and the molds for the US-1 line were lost. Cougar founders Clive Curtis raised his son Steve Curtis with throttle and steering wheel and Steve Curtis remains a high profile and highly sought professional Superboat Driver/Throttleman based From Orlando Florida. Steve Curtis is currently co-driving of Miss Geico. In addition, Steve is still operating the Cougar Brand with the Cougar team building custom “ built to order” boats in England under the Cougar name cougar-powerboats.com
The asking price is Cougar US-1- 38 is only $109,985.00 or $134,985.00 with certified freshened engines, new clearcoat and new cockpit cover. The price includes a Tri-axel Aluminum Trailer with new wheels springs etc.
