towing a 32' AT

Can anyone give me an idea of mileage when your towing a 32' AT??? Looking at pulling a friend's 32 from OK out to Havasu for the Desert Storm Run. I have a 07.5 Dodge 3/4 ton Megacab with the 6.7L auto 6-speed. The boat sits on a triple axle Myco. Just wondering if 12 mpg or better is possible or should I be expecting less than 10???

Thunderstruck 12-29-2008 07:29 PM

My 3/4 ton chevy with 6.0 L gets 7-8 mpg in the hills and 10 mpg on flat land at 70-75 mph. I think towing speed is a big factor. 65 mph would be best if you can stand it.

Griff 12-29-2008 08:59 PM

A 32 AT weighs about 9-10k on a steel trailer, if that helps.

Gladhe8er 12-29-2008 11:37 PM

I get 10-11 MPG towing my 28 on a triple axle Myco with my 07 Titan. Your mileage I imagine would be worse.

rssteiny 12-30-2008 07:51 AM

I get 14-15 towing my 32 with my 03 f250 power stroke with a chip. and my truck has 37s on it.

Thats good mileage, I only get 12.5 pulling my 24' boat with 04 F-250 Powerstroke.

37SR 12-30-2008 11:27 AM

Thanks.......I was hoping to hear at least 11 or better if someone had the same truck but I think I might be dreaming. I want to plan fuel stops so I'm not stopping every time it gets down to a half tank. At 1160 miles one way, I don't think I can plan on keeping it at 65, that's almost 18 hours. I would like to run 75 minimum even if I have to stop one additional time for diesel. Should be a fun trip anyway, ready for April to get here!!

Very cool, running in the 70's or did you keep the speed down? I know running from OK west on I-40 to Havasu we will be climbing clear up to 7000' so I know I will suffer just from that.

aabaroni 12-30-2008 03:27 PM

65 to 70 all the way.

37SR 12-30-2008 04:36 PM

Thanks.

I get 13.5 pulling my 33 on a dual axle Myco with my 6.0 diesel 04 F350 averaging 75mph.

slboatdrinks 12-30-2008 08:03 PM

Oh yeah, it's a stick.

slboatdrinks 12-30-2008 08:12 PM

Did I mention it has 126k miles on it?

I've got a 07 Megacab 3500 dually. I get 10-11mpg pulling my 37 at 75. The best thing I could have done to this truck was install an inframe 56 gallon tank. From Va. to the AT factory I only stop for fuel twice.

www.transferflow.com is the website for the tank.

If you can't drive a clutch with 126k on it, you can't drive a stick...period.

Yes, still the original clutch. Can you say "Highway miles"....

Last one I drove was in a 69 Z-28 I had in high school. Back then all I did was floor the accelerator and dump the clutch. I didn't get the kind of miles out of mine like you have :p

 Ahhh, fun times back then. I did a lot of clutch dumpin' too. Nothing quite that nice though...until I get my Vette. But that was much later in life. :p

Is yours a 5.9 or the new 6.7L with all the limiting EPA emissions crap like mine??? Seriously considering putting on the DPF delete kit but I hate to lose all my warranty. I like that tank, that's a nice possibility. I bet it was fun filling that behemoth when diesel was $4.95 :grinser010:

I never plan on even slowing down through there!! I've heard it's a biotch and don't even think of trying to find fuel while going through town! Our plan is to be going through there sometime Wednesday night so we don't deal with too much traffic.

Will start watching for caravan threads going to Havasu!

Mine is the 5.9 and from what I hear I'm glad it is. This summer I tried to fill up everytime I got down to 1/2 tank so I didn't get sticker shock.

aabaroni 12-31-2008 10:41 AM

My 2008 is 6.7 with dpf delete kit no cat with edge chip.

R Addiction 12-31-2008 12:58 PM

I guess I'm not doing that bad then...2000 K2500 4x4 w/454/Auto. Towing a 25 Active...11-12 at 65-70mph.

excursion 12-31-2008 02:31 PM

My 6.0 Ford pulls the BEAST anywhere I want it to go, stopping was another story, just added elec. over hyd. brakes to the trailer.
No problem now.

2006 Duramax Dually 4x4 pulling 25' Thunder - I get 14mpg - Delivered a 33' cross country to Havasu and averaged 12.1 including crossing the rockies. U should be able to average 11-12 I would think in an 07 Goat :evilb:

h2owarrior 01-01-2009 06:55 PM

I towed my 37 with a F350 Crew Cab Dually 4X4 with the 7.3L Powerstroke and got 11-12 running between 65-75. I had a Diablo 3 setting chip and ran it in the power (not performance) mode. Great truck for towing:drink:

With a gas motor pulling a 32, I would plan for 8-9 for stops and hope for 10-11.

The 6.7L is a Cummins diesel, not a gas burner. However, it's loaded with tons of new EPA crap to make it burn cleaner. Put it this way, I have 22k miles on it and the inside of the exhaust tip still looks brand new on a diesel. I'm all for being clean but it really cuts the mileage down.

I guess I have been lucky, I have not had one single problem with mine yet and like I said above, 22k miles and ticking. I looked at a 5.9 but just decided to try out the newer model with the exhaust brake and six speed auto tranny.

Did that wake that beast up?? :evilb:

rssteiny 01-02-2009 03:13 PM

The edge chip woke up my 03 7.3 power stroke on the lowest setting and i picked up 4 mpg in the process.:drink:
