600sc and air intake
I was looking around the engine bay of my new Tantrum and noticed there are really only 3 openings for what I call "make up air" (vents)
I was thinking a big block with a blower and two carbs would need a bit more air than that, no? Would I be wasting my time putting in a couple more vents.. or am I just missing something. dumb question number 2: is it still power steering fluid in the pump? :party-smiley-004: |
ATF or Dexron for the PS. Don't you have 2 vents on each side?
|
Thanx Pat, that makes sense, I thought it was a bit too red for PS fluid.
Theres one vent per side, two holes, one hole is used for the blower. I was thinking more vents to the battery compartment and then to the outside. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...n/thunder2.jpg Theres only room for one vent per side |
Its been fine for 11 years. I wouldn't worry about it. The carbs are 800cfm(cubic feet/minute) each. Unless you are going to do a hatch scoop, I doubt you'll notice any difference.

If I'm thinking right, the first 28 with a 525 was running a little short on clean air so there may be something to this. Take her out for a few wide open runs, one with the hatch down and the next with the hatch cracked just enough to let some air in. It can't hurt anything, it won't cost anything and it will answer your question.

I seem to remember the spec is 2-3" of water vacuum in the engine compartment max. How you would measure it I don't know. My old procharged Baja ran faster with the engine hatch cracked!!! Hit the throttle, trim button, tabs and engine hatch switch all at the same time.
|
If you run w/ the hatch cracked open, put a line over the front of it so there's no chance of it blowing open. ;)
If you have a cushion on your hatch, w/o going to a scoop, i don't know how you'd get more air in there. pantera has been putting NACA ducts on the outer sides of the hatch, and making the pad narrower. |

We use to raise Thunder Roys 32(525SC's) hatch about 2 inches.
Boy that boat would run and the sound!!! just like a heard of cats going through a fan!! |
The back seat comes up with the hatch so not to sure how my passengers would react to the back of their seat coming up lol
I probably have to go up a good 12" before it opens enough to get any extra air. I`ll have to come up with somethin.. extra air can`t hurt |
My previous boat had a 600SC (Profile cat). It had a hatch scoop and one set of vets on the sides. I decided to put exit vets on the back of the boat. It really helped it out. You might want to try that. The AT has room for them.
|
Exit vents? Can you elaborate?
|
Vents on the transom of the boat so the hot air can escape

I`ll have to come up with somethin.. extra air can`t hurt They can sit but they will probably be blocking some air your doing this to get more performance which mean a higher top speed..I believe if you're running for top speeds with passengers the passengers should be standing and holding on to the "OH SH*T " bars and able to see and re-act to any quick and unusual circumstance. |
You should be testing w/ one guy on the boat.
No need for added weight, or people getting in your way. |
Good point
