You were allowed to use a box ONLY if you had a straight hull, (no steps).

I did, I did. Sad day. One of the last times out, Dave M was out in his new 30' Superboat, and Randy had the Fountain out, running good. There were a couple other performance boats out around Gilligan's, it was probably high 50's. Are you going to have a new boat next year?

Hope I'm not too late for this conversation. It's not every thread that you hear about the 25. FYI, '97 tantrum with hp 500 and bravo 1... Loves to porpoise, and I hate it!!! I have ran a 26 B1, and a 27 & 28 labbed. Does it with all three props. Sorry I can't measure anything...too busy freezing my a*s off. I would love to stop this as well. In the FPC powerboat club Hawks Cay 2009 video you can see how much the boat porpoises. Any help would be great. Hi Pat!!!

I plan on picking up where I left off in early Spring.
You have a link for the video? |
Is that 25 faster than a Y2K Superboat???Just wondering:evilb::evilb::evilb:

yes

Nice as allways. |
Not always. Must have been a light day (fuel and coolers)
|
Does it porpoise when wide open? I think you said it didn't , but can't remember.
|
No porpoise at all.

The One Vision Active Thunder really has no porpoise issues unless you are running 30 to 35 mph in perfectly GLASS water. We have played with standoff boxes, "shortie" drives, various props, and probably lots of other stuff that my damaged brain can't remember. Some of the facts we learned; My 25 Thunder did not respond well to the standoff box. We gained maybe 1-1.5 mph, but the boat did not handle well and wanted to launch the nose to the moon in any .kind of rough water. We could slide the box up & down so we played with various drive heights, using various props (Hydromotives & Bravos). We studied a lot of video of our boat as well as the Neville Moberly "Chaos" boat, that aslo had a box. After a LOT of testing, we removed the box and never looked back. Gordo is right on. I have the scars to prove the box was a bad idea. It was wicked quick but penalized you for getting greedy for those few extra MPH. Looks like you are running right past the strakes but in the heart of the rocker in the bottom of the 25'. Check the bottom with a straight edge to see how much rocker you have. Remember these boats. (Chaos and One Vision) were not set up to run at 45-58 mph. They were set up to run WFO. Gordo and I had to move weight around not just for our weight differance but als the boat liked to run with a few (24-40) lbs in the nose. In real rough stuff I remember putting 50-70 lbs of shot as far forward as we could. we ran props left and right hand with all differant rakes and had a rough time keeping the nose down. |
Andy! Mu Man! Glad you chimed in. I was hoping my memory wasn't too far off. :lolhit: I'm sure you remember the testing details alot better than me. I do remember doing a lot of work and a lot of .testing in a short period of time. When it was all said & done, the old saying "it's not how fast you go but how you go fast" rang true
Hope you're doing well my friend |
I know we ran alot of props down in Florida before the Worlds after getting the box on. Miklos gave us alot if ideas that worked on the Corsa. Right or left rotation props didn't make much difference. I remember we loweres the box an inch before the second race which helped settle the nose. Over 80 mph it was a handful no matter what.
Things are goin well.. We need to catch up |
You guys were getting 80 plus with the "stock" HP500?
|
Best speed in legal Factory 1 setup was 83.1
We could run 80 pretty much anytime with fuel at half-tank or less. Boat loaded with people, coolers, full of fuel, hot humid day, hot water, we could still bank on 77 |
Wow. What prop did you run?
|
Our rough water setup was a 26 Hydromotive q-4.
Our Shootout/flat water prop was a labbed 28 bravo 4blade |

Ok maybe thats not a rocker, could it just be thats where the hull starts to curve up? the hull is also straight and flat once it "turns" up, 44" in front of transom. And its more like 1/16" gap at the end of the level.

UPDATE: Just got back from testing with my drive .5 " lower(2" spacer). It did not start to porpoise/hop until around 65mph. Thats better by 5mph. And once it started it was not as pronounced as before. May have lost 50 to 100 rpm and a mph but not real sure. I will try more things this weekend, I ran out of playtime today.
This makes me real curious about going lower. But I dont want to loose speed. |

well...what happened. did you fix it or learn to live with it? I am thinking about removing a slight hook to increase speed but don't want that to happen! I have no porpoising all the way up and over the 80 mark.
|
I have been living with it. Until last weak when my crank broke:poopoo: I'm currently building a 555 and am intersested to see if it will pull out of the porpoise. I had a Baja that porpoised until I got it to go faster(65 to 75). hopefully the new 555 will get me from 77 up to 87+ and I will need the boat to settle down at that speed. I will start a thread when the motor nears completion.
If it aint broke, don't try and fix it. If you like the way it rides, I'd leave it. Good luck. |
Just reread this thread from beginning to end.....I cant wait to tear into this boat this winter! Bustin out the tape measure tomorrow Nick. Hope the engine build is going well.

I have a '98 running running an injected 555cu. In glass smooth water i get a very slight porpoise at about 55-58 mph. You can eliminate this by actually trimming up the drive slightly, or barely dropping the tabs in the water. I usually trim up slightly and let it slip a little and it goes away. Boat loves to cruise in the 70 - 75 range. Running stock drive height XR and a labbed 30 or 32 bravo 4 blade. Personally, i cant stand the way my boat handles with a hydro (my 2 cents worth) but Gordo used to run one I think. Day in and day out, seems like the Tantrums like the 4 blades and NOTHING under 30ft will touch that boat in rough water. I am selling and moving up to a 37' but dang that 25 is fun :) If you still want some measurements, let me know.

Poker&Run, what is your prop depth? bottom of the boat to center of your propshaft with the drive neutral. And all that other crap Carrera said, plus top speed.
|
On the way back from Destin Poker Run. I will be happy to get you some measurements in the morning.

Did you get zapped?

Active Thunder has a whole new meaning. We got caught out in the storm Friday during the Fun Run. Terrible electrical storm on the back side of the rain. Got in the cuddy, no more than shut the door, and lightning hit the stern light. Burned the top 4 inches off the pole. No damage to boat other than it zapped the ECM. We were very fortunate.
