bolster seat loose. please help.
Good Morning Guys,
OCD comes out of hibernation next weekend.. Still have snow on the ground and ice on the lake but after this week of 70 degree weather I should be good to go. On my list of many things to do this year is to fix my captains bolster seat. The screws keep loosening up. We are sure the holes are stripped. I fear the longer I go without fixing it, it will just get much worse and be harder to fix. My question to you is: Has anyone had this problem? How did you fix it? I have been told to remove the bolster seat, drill out the suspect holes and fill them in? Is this correct? Also what do I fill it in with before re-screwing it in? Does anyone know a particular product? Thanks |
Remember when your drilling on that floor that your fuel tank is underneath of it.

Epoxy in a heli lock and the bolster framing might cover it. Could just redrill your bolster framing over to the side of the existing bolts and tap new ones. Just epoxy in the old existing screws or bolts to make it look like it was done on purpose.
|
Marine Tex or better yet a two part epoxy. Let it set up fully. Then drill to the depth of the original screws with the proper size drill bit. Then reinstall original screws as long as they are not boogered up. If they are, replace with the exact size screw. Hope this works for ya. If not send me a prepaid gas card and I'll drive up and fix it for ya!

Did it come loose from bobing:lolhit::evilb:

just put slightly larger or longer screws in, find out how much room you have or whats underneath.
|
|
Drill out the holes to accept a hardwood wood dowel that is at 1/4 inch larger than the screws you have. Using the drill or a dremel tool, carefully enlarge the lower end of the hole at least another 1/8 inch forming a taper from top to bottom ( larger at the bottom ). Using a hand saw blade, cut a few small grooves in the outside face of the dowel plugs.
Use high strength, slow cure epoxy to bond the dowels into the hole. Now redrill the dowels to the proper size for your screws. The result will be stronger than the original. |
Here ya go

On "the 32" toggles didn't work.
We put an inspection plate in and then used a threaded stainless back plate with aircraft locking nuts...done deal and survived the hurricane that did the boat in. in fact wwe did it to the fishboat also. The A.T. had the plate glassed in. Can't remember if glassed on fishboat. The A.T. also had the bases 5200 to the foor to make sure water didn't get in it again. |
Got the Toggles and going to head to Fastnall to get the bolts.. They say what size to buy to fit the toggles but the X factor is how thick is the floor? Basically what LENGTH Bolts should I get?
Anyone know how much space I will have between the floor and gas tank approximately? How thick is the floor? Thanks again! PS. Don't Worry.... Remedy is flying up for a couple days to take care of all the maintanence and teach me the ropes. |
