big thanks to the cult at boyne thunder

Big thanks to tom (rock climber & crew) for the parts, knowledge, tools and help.

Thanks to sydways for the help and scanning my boat too.

Unfortunately despite all efforts we still wernt able to do the run.

There's always next year.

verbi69 07-16-2012 06:45 AM

That sucks, What did you break??

yzbert 07-16-2012 12:11 PM

We had a blast, sorry about your bad luck.

Brian - Thank You for grabbing my boat and putting it in the slip, greatly appreciated. Would have never made my sons baseball game in time with out the help!

THE 288 KID 07-16-2012 01:14 PM

#7 exhaust rocker got out of alignment and the pushrod came out of the dimple and up along side of it. Replaced the parts and its still missing.

Might be done for the season dunno yet.

carrera1 07-16-2012 01:32 PM

weeeee, love boats!

verbi69 07-16-2012 01:36 PM

Damn, aren't those fresh top ends/ rebuilds????

THE 288 KID 07-16-2012 02:18 PM

The rocker that got messed up had already been replaced since it was different than the rest. So It's happened before. Dunno how much of anything I believe about my boats maintenance history anymore. O well. Atleast ill know its done right from now on.

Tom (rock climber) had the exact same thing happen to his 525 too. Same rocker and everything.

Will see what ck motorsports figures out this week. Both motors might be going under the knife for some bigger power.

boatfreak 07-16-2012 04:40 PM

Sorry you had the trouble and let's hope it's not that bad.

THE 288 KID 07-16-2012 05:26 PM

Hopefully I can get it through the summer and plan the overhaul for the motors over the winter.

I see high 90's in my future!

Sorry to hear your troubles Jordon. Hope you still had fun!!

Actually the reason the pushrod came out is because the valve stuck in the guide. The 525 has a small amour of reversion on 7 & 8 cyl at idle. That causes carbon to stick to the valve stem and eventually it will stick, causing the valve head to hit piston and bend the valve. Common problem with the 525, they all do it, usually between 250 to 300 hours. Also the exhaust flange of the head will probably be very corroded. You are still missing because the valve is bent. The valve springs merc uses are marginal at best further causing this problem. When I do the 525 cylinder heads I hone the exhaust guides for a little more clearence. I also use a looser valve seal on the exhaust side to allow more oil down the guide. Coupled with a much better spring and retainer package.

aabaroni 07-17-2012 12:55 PM

yep that's what happened to mine.

THE 288 KID 07-17-2012 01:26 PM

Yes drew (remedy) knows what he is talking about and knows more about heads and engine building than most anyone. Had him do my heads a couple years back.

Probably your fastest, easiest way to get back on the water right now is to put the new Dart heads on. They are about half the cost of merc heads. Then later in winter they can be ported and do the rest of the package. If your heads are really bad (flange corrosion, guides badly worn etc.) It's more cost effective to use the new dart head. Before they came out w that head you had no choice but to fix them because the merc head is very expensive.

outriggers 07-17-2012 11:25 PM

I'm not sure if it applies to your 525s, but there is a Merc service bulletin, deals with removing the lower bypass hose. Doug

That's actually not bad pricing... If your heads need a bunch of welding and machining to make them work... I suspect they will. I know its a big chunk to swallow, but that's the cost of having these toys. Beware of lowball quotes for your stuff... Usually its low and when they get into it, it goes way up. Most of the time when its done, you could have had the new heads.

+1, do it right the first time. you'll end up spending the same amount in the long run anyway. + you'll make more power

I thought the 525 used edelbrock marine heads. They are not that expensive...no need to buy anything from Merc

They are made for merc by edelbrock out of old beer cans. The 525 has a special exhaust flange bolt pattern, therefore the casting is different. An off the shelf edelbrock head will not work.

onesickpantera 07-26-2012 09:29 AM

Hey KID any updates?

THE 288 KID 07-26-2012 10:38 AM
