Another prop question. ..

Currently running a 23 mirage lefty that I picked up cheap because I trashed my hydro 25. Like the feel of the 3 blade..but underproped, bumping the rev limit at about 63 mph at 5200 with a little less than 1/3 throttle to go. Should I go bother trying a 25 or just jump to 27 ? Only thing I miss is it takes longer to plane, wonder if that would improve with more pitch. ..or just go back to a 4 blade...but it seems like a 3 blade would be faster.

camptappakeg69 06-27-2014 03:57 PM

Allright got a 25 mirage rh....won't be here till next week ...more speed #'s to follow.Running good this year..fresh tune up...injectors were sent out, tested, cleaned.

camptappakeg69 07-12-2014 03:30 PM

Alright.. best I saw today with 2 fat guys and full tank was 67.8 at 4800 with the 25 mirage. Conditions were 1' chop with a lot big boat wakes. Think I goin back to a 4 blade!

state1310 07-12-2014 06:13 PM

i run a 4 blade 25p on my tantrum . never checked gps . planes out real good and runs high 60s at 4600ish with plenty of throttle left.

camptappakeg69 07-12-2014 09:00 PM

What do you have for power? Had a hydro motive QIV 25 saw 70 for the best. .but lite load running on fumes

state1310 07-12-2014 09:27 PM

modified 502 550hp ish . should run mid 70s . havent had a good chance to run it wide open trimmed out since my rebuild . taking it iut all next week on vacation hoping to really see what she can do .

camptappakeg69 07-12-2014 10:20 PM

Sweet...mine pretty much stock except for gill exhaust and ecm reflash. Guessing about 425....almost time for refresh has about 470 hrs

I have a hydromotive p5x 24 pitch right hand) that I don't use. I changed my gear ratio and this prop no longer works for me. It is in good cond. (never worked). make reasonable offer if interested. (No hub).

Thanks Ray! Testing it out tomorrow.

SHORTFUSE 07-26-2014 07:53 PM

Lets know if that P5X doesn't work for you. I tries a 25 pitch and it was slightly too big.

raytart 07-26-2014 09:07 PM

You're welcome. Keep us posted. After reading your posts on the props you tried, I think that prop should work well for your boat. Good luck

Finally got to test it today. Lost 1 mph at top end. Cruise speed seems decent at around 50 mph at 3800. Seems quicker on midrange acceleration. Will keep experimenting with it...kinda crappy conditions today. All in all pretty happy with it!

raytart 07-28-2014 07:13 AM

What was your best speed and at what rpm?

What is engines max rpm?

camptappakeg69 07-28-2014 12:03 PM

Rev limit at 5300.
Usually don't push it past 5..
Best I saw was 66 at 4900..but I couldn't get into the throttle and trim that much, crappy day and it was steadily getting rougher as the day went on.

state1310 07-28-2014 12:53 PM

my 4 blade 25p got me to 72.5 last week at 4800rpm .1/4 tank of fuel .

raytart 07-28-2014 02:00 PM

In order to see if you're propped correctly.. You gotta open it up and see if you're at the redline. If you're into the limiter your prop is to small. If you can't come close to redline, you're over propped. I understand that you don't want to push it for fear of breaking it, so move over and I'll drive! Lol

raytart 07-28-2014 02:07 PM

Those numbers equate to just over 11% slip which is great. Next time condition allow. Open it up and trim it out and jot down the numbers. I think you should be over 70.

camptappakeg69 07-28-2014 07:15 PM

Ya can't remember what the drive ratio is.
Had it rebuilt the first winter I had it....not sure what they put in it...pulling the drive this winter for a paint job and maintenance, so I can check it then. Got a bad trim tab on the port side also that needs to be addressed also. I can't keep the tabs level with hull bottom anymore. Lots of things on the list this winter already!

.

raytart 08-07-2014 01:13 PM

Have you had a chance to open her up? What were the results?

Didn't make it to the lake last weekend, heading up first thing in the am for nice 3 day weekend. Should be able to crank it up!

raytart 08-07-2014 09:09 PM

That's is a beautiful lake from the looks in the pic. My wife wants for us to have a summer get away like that on a lake, and so do I. SHE better get a better job!

I bought a new prop with the $ from the p5x. I found a cheap online place called performance marine in lake placid Florida. Good prices, no tax, but $30 shipping and no returns. Seems like only merc props though. A little slow to deliver but that's ok if you have other props to use.

camptappakeg69 08-08-2014 07:25 PM

Ya we lucky, enjoy most weekends

camptappakeg69 08-10-2014 09:18 AM

68 @ 5000 is the best so far.
But sticky flat water. Picked up better time to plane with a boat load of people..kicked up later in the afternoon coming back from the beach but too many people to play hard.
