Winter projects...

What's everyone got going?

Sommer Thunder is getting totally rebuilt drives...new cryo'ed gearsets, XZ upper gears, and fresh paint and stickers.

Plus...new microwave, new batteries, new battery charger, all new toggle switches on dash (stupid saltwater!), and a Gorilla-glued faceplate on the fridge that will hopefully NOT come off!

Oh yeah...and heading over to TD Custom Paint in the spring for some much-needed retouching...

ALL_IN! 02-05-2016 09:07 AM

Whos doing your drives?

Hey Mike, you have any experience with Cryoing any tooling? I have had cryo'd disk brakes on my old dually and i thought it made a HUGE difference for me for towing/stopping power when using carbon brake pads......but we have been thinking of doing some tooling here at work (carbide cutters and other stuff for the CNC machines) and just wondering if you had any luck with that?

TooLateVTEC 02-05-2016 10:38 AM

Just got my swim platform back from getting it repowder coated from purple to silver metallic.

Need to get 2 sets of headers

Fix headliner

Hopefully wrap it

Take the cleats off and have them re powder coated white

Install disc brakes on the middle axle on the trailer

Add my EOH setup to the trailer

I think thats it for this winter, LOL

Drock78 02-05-2016 04:47 PM

Pulled engines, painted the bilge, led work lights in the bilge, underwater leds, new blower hoses and blowers, replace all light bulbs with leds, new steering wheel and livorsi controls, powdercoat the swim platform and grab handles in the cockpit and custom bilge vents and switching trailer over to EOH

mountainmadness 02-05-2016 07:59 PM

Rebuild both engines
Rebuild transom assemblies
Paint transom
Paint all hardware on transom, drives included
Remove everything from bilge, paint, re rig
New vents
Different exhaust
New indicator cables
Trailer needs a makeover dont know if ill get it done this spring.

Thats all i can think of now lol

donzi matt 02-05-2016 08:23 PM

Just dont drink the kool aid and you should be ok.......

boatfreak 02-06-2016 12:55 PM

The biggest project we have this winter is finding time to get back to Florida so we can use the boat. Why does work always have to get in the way?

abmotorman 02-06-2016 07:08 PM

The first Savage made is getting new vinyl and foam on the walls in the cabin and Scorpion full roller rockers. (should have done these when I did my engines 2 years ago). Planning on upgrading gauges and switches next year. That is if a new to me 37 doesn't find me first. I WILL be seriously looking next summer (2017) after selling my other home.

Good thread Mike, I always pay attention to these especially in the AT thread.

Nah...we don't cryo any of our stuff. Most of the tools we manufacture are sintered bonded tools as opposed to a solid cutter.

-throttle bezel
-another pair of JL 8.8s
-bass knob to turn up or down the subwoofers
-removal of the side rails along the cockpit
-billet bilge blower vent covers
-billet side vent covers
-new windshield
-repair bow light cup so it drains properly
-install mini pin cleats for fenders
-new vinyl rigid rub rail

I'm sure we are going to really miss it but no we won't be there this year. I think we have been there 5 or 6 yrs in a row but it's time for something different. I believe we will be at the Lanier run and maybe Destin.

George is a good guy...and VERY thorough! He wanted me to be there when they disassembled my drives so he could show me EXACTLY what needed to be done. I was there for TWO HOURS, lol.

Figures. We are tentatively planning on being there this year...but without the boat. Hanging out and hitching a ride for the run, then heading north to do a bike ride across the Upper Peninsula...

Gonna try for Old Hickory this year, though...

Are you coming up for the Michigan City races?

You have XR drives and putting XZ upper gears? Is that an upgrade?

Yup. Helical cut vs straight cut gears. Do a search on this site, there are a number of guys that have done it.

I hadn't thought about the races but I won't say no.

I thought I read that for lighter hulls and smaller power??

I can't see putting money in those drives, broke one at Boyne last year, ruins your trip.

I can see putting money in those drives...because when they pulled them apart, the reaction was "Holy hell...I can't believe those things were still working!" Sooo....it was pretty much necessary. As to the gearsets, yes, there are plusses and minuses to deal with...but we are talking Bravo-based drives here, so...there's your problem.

And, being the person that I happen to be...whenever I travel a long distance with the boat...I've got a spare XR locked in the bed of the truck so my trip DOESN'T get ruined... :)

Yea, that is what I was saying, Bravo drive :(.

Carrying a spare I guess, but when my drive broke in Harbor springs a spare wouldn't have helped until I got back to Boyne...at that point my day was already over. Drive had 180 hours on it with the gear oil changed every 20 hours (sometimes less) with Amsoil Severe Gear.

(not arguing, Mike, just too bad the drives aren't more reliable.)
