Extreme Measures... Make Over Edition

So, I finally got fed up with the damaged gel coat and not being able to get a shine on the boat. See thread https://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/...-gel-help.html . Also the outdated paint needed to be brought into the 2000's. This was always in the back of my mind when I purchased the boat in 2016. This summer it was expedited. I was talking to my friend (painter) at the start of the summer. I was checking out a couple boats he had just finished up. I was jokingly telling him I needed to get my boat painted in the next few years. He answered back "If I wanted to get it painted this summer he would use it as filler work between summer repairs". We worked out some details and we had a deal.
.
I told him I would DA off the painted graphics and all the clear coat (80, 220, 320 grit). I would bring the boat to him in a 320 grit ready for filler prime and block sand. And so the fun began...
Some of you might have already seen the pics on other social media platforms.

When he received the boat they started repairing all the stress cracks in the hull. And there were a lot. Also I uncovered some damage under the paint. They also filled the unused holes in the transom and old generator exhaust holes.

And after many, many hours of work. I get to take it home.
All the paint is pearl metallic. Gold pearl in the orange, silver in the green, silver and dark silver. The dark charcoal (tear/ripped graphics) has an opal pearl metallic, it has all colors in it. In the sun this thing sparkles everywhere.

I started this at the end of May. It was a ton of work on my part and my painters part. This boat was in bad shape. Boat is heading this week to my glass guy for the new transom. I know I should have done it first, but timing did not work out.

speicher lane 10-12-2020 07:34 AM

Sharp paint scheme...turned out really nice and compliments the boat beautifully.

payuppsucker 10-12-2020 10:22 AM

Man that thing looks great!
The paint scheme really suits the boats lines.

What wheel are we talking about? I need a matching spare. The one on my trailer currently is for my Panther.

Thanks,
That is actually something the renderings revealed. The lines on this hull are many and distinct. I love all white boats (see my Panther) but this hull definitely needs graphics. Just the simple extra stripe running from the top front bow to the bottom of the stern added so much. (that was my only artistic addition)

Update to the max. Looks good.
That a top of the line right angle D/A sander on the deck? Most importantly how well it do to cut through the old paint?

It worked fantastic! I highly recommend it. I believe the graphics were Imron with clear over them. I don't have the volume of air out at my storage shop so I went with electric. Ran off my generator. (my solar system wouldn't keep up with all day demand) This was the first time I actually used a DA to remove paint.

Got the sanding discs there also. Worked great.

Absolutely stunning design and paint. I'm not a fan of orange myself, but that looks awesome. I'd totally buy that!

I think that paint is off the chart ! Great choice of colors and crazyness ! Best of luck on the transom repairs and hope the paint does not get damaged.

Like a whole different boat!

Boat looks great, beautiful choice of colors. How it the transom coming? Will you continue the graphics into the bilge?

Thanks everyone! Greatly appreciated. It's been a long process and should be worth it in the end. At least I keep telling myself that.

1Zoom, the transom is coming along and should be done in a couple of weeks. I do not plan on bringing the graphics in the bilge. That can open another can and I do not want to try to keep up with that kind of detail in the bilge. The termination of the graphics is kind of strategically located to not be too abrupt when the hatch is on opened and closed. I was thinking of maybe painting it silver, but I'm just going to leave it for now. I have enough projects that are paralleling with this project. I still need to finish the engine upgrades, dyno, install hardware, tear down drives, paint and polish.

jeff32 12-11-2020 10:57 PM

Again, outstanding job!
keep it up... summer is almost just around the corner!!:)

1Zoom 12-12-2020 08:47 AM

I understand, these projects usually grow larger than expected. The boat looks awesome, keep up the great work.
