Re: pics of runnin hot
Wow, Haven't seen that boat in years!
Like dyno said he used to come in and wake everybody up. He ran with Larry Hollenbeck quite abit. If I remember they always competed against each other allot which I think later turned ugly. Your pictures don't even do that boat Justice. That fella had a serious maintance program and the boat was always top notch. Hope you enjoy it, where is it's new home? Cougarman |
Re: pics of runnin hot

And how fast is she currently running? Thanks Cougarman |
Re: pics of runnin hot
Motors are 1000Hps but we dont have it dialed in yet. The guys that are rigging it said at 5200rpms they were 100mph + but no gps numbers yet.

Re: pics of runnin hot
Talk about bringing back memories.....I rode in that boat many, many times. Bobby Harris knew how to drive that boat too, but pretty soon the boat drove him so he had to sell it! By that I mean he had a pretty tall reputation to live up to with that boat and that meant he had to have BIG blowers with the BIGGEST mechanical roller cams he could get away with in that thing which it meant a TON of maintenance time he was personally putting into it. It broke a lot with those mechanical rollers---but that's what he felt he needed to stay on top---even though it was just a hi-perf pleasure boat. Finally, it all caught up with him and he threw in the towel. One day I had to drive it back from South Haven the first year Bobby owned it as he had one too many Long Island Ice Tea's at the Idler. That was back when Jeff Haylett had his 33' Fountain called "Just for the Rush" before he got into the racing circuit. Bobby stood by me and made me race Haylett ALL the way back to St. Joe. It's about a 20 mile trip one way and I remember it as being probably the shortest trip going south from South Haven to St. Joe I ever had. At that time Bobby only had 461" naturally aspirated engines with mechincal roller cams built by Bruce "Wolffie" Wolff. Bobby entered the boat in a race in Saugatuck and took first 1st or 2nd Place that year with Wolff's engines.
The shortest trip I ever had going north from St. Joe to South Haven was most likely on Jimmy Ariola's 38' Cougar "SAVAGE" when we were racing Carl Warren and his 41' Apache "WARHAWK"-----Jimmy spanked him good and the wave/water conditions were BIG and NASTY that day! Too many stories to tell I guess. Anyway Heath, you got yourself a true runner there and that boat has got itself one heck of a reputation around these parts as you can see by the others chiming in. Believe me, people knew of, and feared that boat! Glad you are happy---HAVE FUN with it! :) |
Re: pics of runnin hot
Kaama,
I wondered how long before you would see this thread. :D :D You of all people should write a book on the local Offshore history around these parts. Did you get those bad boys dynoed yet. Hope all is going well. Cougarman |
Re: pics of runnin hot
VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!! I need to add that to my wall in the "Man Room" (the only room in my house that I can call mine...the finished basement!! I let her keep her washer/dryer down there)
That is a beautiful, well kept boat!! You are selling the hull with no power......right? If so How much? |

Re: pics of runnin hot
I remember Runnin Hot. Used to see it in Saugatuck and Holland. Saw it go by a hot yellow cat called SHOWDOWN once and run with Offshore Horror and Home Wrecker. Can't remember what year but there was a dozen of us all waiting for the chain ferry (sound echoing off the seawalls was incredible) in Saugatuck and on the other side was Allegan Co. boys - they picked Runnin Hot for a decibel ck :D
Here is a chopper pic of her a buddy shot during 93???? Poker Run when they did a mass ticketing for interfearing with a sailboat regatta out of South Haven. Very sharp set-up! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4.../runninhot.jpg |
Re: pics of runnin hot
Woogie, If I could only get that picture a little clearer  That needs to be on my boat wall.

Re: pics of runnin hot
That pic there was before the interior was redone and the top of the boat is painted differently now. We just put it back up for sale. I really hate to sell it but would like to go bigger and a step hull.

Re: pics of runnin hot
That picture is an example of an all too familiar seen with Bobby and his boat--- :D
He seemed to get stopped a lot by the Marine patrol guys----much of which he brought on himself---he was always terrorizing the sail boaters and pulling a lot of stunts that he shouldn't have. I rode a lot on the boat called "Offshore Horror" (30' Scarab T/454's, 450hp with some mods we did) once owned by my friend Mike. We were always boating a lot with Bobby and Sue with their A/T. Another boat that hung around them a lot was a 31' black colored Sonic called "Thriller" owned by Bruce Chapman---a very close friend of Bob's. "Homewrecker" was a 30' Carrera with a big set of engines in it that was pretty quick as well. Bobby did a little bit of running around with "SAVAGE" (38' Cougar) as well---but Bobby couldn't beat SAVAGE. Every time Bobby would try Jimmy would spank him BAD!!!-----but Jimmy had HUGE supercharged power in the Cougar that was just almost unheard of back in that day. Jimmy was probably one of the very first guys to have supercharged engines in his boat on the Great Lakes that we know of back then. I think Marc from BAM Marine was one of the first as well in his 36' Cig. Those were some real good days I tell you! We had A LOT of fun runnin' up and down Michigans west shoreline and all the ports in between. Great memories. |
Re: pics of runnin hot
Speaking of boat from that time frame what ever happened to the 41 Sonic with big power that alway ran with that group? Anybody know what he was running for motors and drives? Running hot is still looking sweet, gota love speedmasters!!

Re: pics of runnin hot
Steve,
That was Larry Hollenbeck, seems at one time they were around 700 cubic inch if memory serves me. He was docked up with Richard the one night and talked to us for most of the night in South Haven. They were carbureted engines with #6's and he said at 104mph she would start chine walking and he was working on getting that corrected. Last I heard he sold it and bought an Ocean Express. Since heard that has sold also and he is into the circle track cars Big time. Take Care Cougarman |
Re: pics of runnin hot
It's interesting for folks like me to read and hear about these things. I was in college then, and since I was broke, I didn't really pay attention to boats. I was on silver beach playing volleyball (the poor man's hobby) and not really even looking out on the lake 1/2 the time.
I do remember Offshore Horror sitting for sale here on a local road. It sat for a long time, uncovered. I remember thinking, "who could own something like that and just let it rot on a street corner?" I think I heard that Kaama even tried to rescue it back in the day? I wasn't really into boats because I wanted one and could barely afford beer, so I only paid attention to certain things. Thriller is now in TX and Bruce has a 45 Sonic, I think Bob Harris now has a cruiser???, so most of these boats are gone. I think dakota Kid is gone also, and that Fountain was around a long time. I DO recall seeing that boat out a lot around Silver Beach. Warhawk is still around, though. Doesn't get used much. The "older" stories are interesting to read and hear about. |
Re: pics of runnin hot
32Fever,
Mike always kept that boat covered up....if you saw it uncovered it was because Mike was working on it a lot in his driveway. We were always doing something to that hog----it was a sharp looking boat in it;s day the way Mike had it painted and running. One year Frank Glass and his crew ran his boat (26' Scarab) up on the South Pier of St. Joe----1986 or so. I will never forget seeing it laying on the pier the following day. It was a year when the water level was very high making the piers difficult to see during the evening----that's when it happened. All were thankfully able to walk away with a few cuts, scrapes and bruises. I think Frank's ego was hurt more than anything. This is back when Chris Merrill had just bought the wrecked tripple engine 38 foot Scarab (raised deck) that was originally owned by Jay VanAndel family that was originally kept in Holland until someone ripped it off and ran it into the pier there. Merrill bought the boat as a wreck and restored it during the winter of 1983. It had tripple KAAMA 454's in it with GIL offshore DRY exhausts, TRS drives with Merc external racing steering. Back then GIL exhaust manifolds were just becoming a HOT item and rarely seen on performance boats unless you had the money to afford them. Merrill had to rebuild the engines---they probably made about 450-475hp each------KAAMA claimed about 525hp but with what it had I don;t think so......Q-jet carbs, dual plane intakes, 8.8 comp ratio, hyd flat tappet cams of 236*/244* on 114*. I know about the cams because I worked on that boat a lot and a cam went flat on the port engine while we were taking it up to Saugatuck one day and got about as far as a few miles north of South Haven when she was given us trouble so we came about and headed for home port of St. Joe. Chris brought the boat back home to his shop and we had the engine pulled out that very day and pulled the cam out and I remember having called KAAMA out in CA for the specs. We just decided to put an Ultradyne cam in it that Merc used for their 440hp Cyclone engines. Chris put a paint job and a name on it called "Polterguiest" and that thing HOWELED!!! Back then Carl Warren (now owner of War Hawk 41' Apache) was just a young teenage kid and would come over to Chris's little marina on Empire with his buddies and just stare inside the engine compartment and comment how cool it was. Merrill had two slips at Pier 1000 back then and would put the Scarab in the water on the weekends to get it dialed in while staying on his 35' Magnum with tripple 454's and arneson drives on the same finger dock. That Scarab had points in the distributors then. That was an awesome boat in its day too! |
Re: pics of runnin hot
More history I love it, Chris is a great guy I got to meet him this past winter. I had no idea he had Black Magic after it was stolen. I found out he also had Jet Set the jet powered 38 Cig also way back when, I mentoined seeing it at one of the grand haven races heading south at an unbelieveable pace. We had alot of cool boat around here back then, it's starting to get pertty good out of Grand Haven agian, and I will do my part to add a sweet ride to this town this spring again and I hope see to it a hot ride gets back on the water out of holland. Re: pics of runnin hot
This thread brings back old memories. I loved Runnin Hot. That was an incredibly loud boat. I remember following Thriller, No Limit and Runnin Hot to the launch ramp at Hammond back when the Milwaukee clipper was still there. You couldn't hear yourself think it was so loud. Everyone was hanging over the clipper to watch them dock. Fun Days. Bobby now has a Hatteras called Runnin Hot. Talk about a big change of pace.
A miss the boats you use to see around Chicago in the early 90's. The Beast, Bam, Dinosaur, Manta and Home Wrecker were all wicked boats. I heard we may get to see the Pink Panther aka Home Wrecker back on the water this season. You could see that rooster tail form miles away. It should be a fun summer. Dan |

Steve/Nykamp, Do you still have your 36' Apache??? The Screamin' Banana!!!! I like it! :D :evilb: I think you deserving to go boating is the biggest understatement of the year. You have lots of making up to do. Are you going to the Chicago boat show? Dan |
Re: pics of runnin hot

Re: pics of runnin hot
Kaama I sold her last spring, the wife and I rode to muskegon last jan. or feb. in Parns 41 Saber and came home and decided to sell that night. Wow do the 41 run out nice in big water, we ran 80 plus in 6 plus foot waves the whole way to muskegon. I will be shopping for a new ride here soon. Steve

Re: pics of runnin hot
Steve,
You had one sweet looking 36'. You guys will look good in a 41'. Are you looking Apache or Saber? Dan |
Re: pics of runnin hot
Thanks Dan, I am trying to decide what route to go, 36 Cocept,or an other 36 or 28 Apache and a lot up north on an inlet to lake michigan, or a 41 APACHE. There are only 4 41 Sabers and only one for sale which is WICKED WON and I would have to sell both of our houses to buy and surport that bad boy. If thing keep going the way they are I may order a new 41 SABER someday. I am going to sell our house on lake delcarlia down in Lowell Ind. soon so then the shopping will go full swing. Hope all is well, Steve.
