28 brave need more mph !!!
where is money best spent for mph
28 apache / twin 502 mpi /bravos /25p 4 blade hydromotives and $10,000 thinking pro chargers or whipple charger would be the easiest MPH Any other ideas ????? Could squeak out a couple more 1000's like 12k 13k but not much more. Any idea how much MPH I could pick up?? Also which part of the bravo is most likely to fail?? sell boat and take my 10k try to buy up ??? I'm not in the 100k check book crowd so that could be tuff |
540s

You wont be able to boost it on that budget unless you can do all of the work yourself, or unless thats your budget per engine. If you are only looking for 1-3 mph then try props & exhaust, If you are lookingfor more speed than that & your budget is in the range you specified then you may want to get a different boat.. The Apache's are an excellent boat & ride superbly, however they take a good ammount of power to cook... Hope it helps you.. :) Jamie / Lakeside

blowers
I do most of my own work,so that helps stretch a dollar!!
These things do add up fast!! Any ideas which system is a better choice?? I think I just answered my own question. check this link http://www.cpperformance.com/detail.aspx?ID=2963 Looks like this procharger set up from CP could work out,of course there are always the unforseen extras that come along with it. |
Do you want to keep the EFI?
Somewhat cheaply (a relative term) you could add a set of blowers from the Merc. 575's, put a good cam, change pistons or maybe even keep them, add some carbureators and make over 600 hp. then sell your efi setup and make some money to offset your costs.. |
efi
If this was a car for the quarter mile,I probably would dump the efi with out worry, but in this instance,I think it is worth keeping the EFI.
I'm not sure how much improved things are for 2008 from Merc as far as efi big blocks. New question---- If I got all the stuff from a 500hp efi motor ( the blue stuff)--intake, electronics ,ect... fuel pumps maybe?? Would I have a 500 horse motor??? Or is there more to it than a program, and intake?? Any guru's out there ??? |
What kind of speeds are you seeing with the 502MPI? How fast are you wanting to go? I think your mistake was buying a 28 apache after having a cat. I'd take the cat out for calm days and the apache out on rough days. She won't see 80, but you won't need to going that fast in 4-5's to have the ride of your life either.
I've seen those 502MPI's beefed up to 520hp 572torque and keep the EFI- see thread http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...light=derebery - that would be my choice for more speed. |
The cam & valvetrain are also particular to the 500hp efi. If you deviate you may have running issues unless you reflash. That said 500 horse out of a 502 mag mpi is doeable with the factory intake, right cam/valve train, headwork, exhaust and ecm program. :) J

you might try some 3b 25p old style mirage props. they seamed to work the best on the 28 i had. if you can turn the rpms with the 25's go to 27's and have them worked.

bigmotor-- what kind of speeds are you seeing with the 502's? I just recently did an engine swap in my 28, still doing some prop testing but these guys aren't kidding when they say the 28 takes some ponies to get them moving!

The answer may be a 17/18 foot hydro stream or allison with a big ass outboard,so I can scare myself every now and then!!!! |
I'll be surprised if you can net 200 hp with your MPI's and chargers. Just to give you a glimpse -- I recently exchanged a set of 454's with 588's ( did 700 hp on dyno) and this thing is only at 83 mph, I was at 72 with the 525 sc's. I think there is more especially when 600 hp is getting 82 in other 28's -- as I said still playing with props ;-).
And I can tell you that I didn't do it for $10 k! |

why? are you looking for more troubles and time off the water? If you want to delete,or edit that ,before any one else see's it ,I will understand. I have a boston whaler also ,that is referd to as "plan B",so I am always on the water. And a couple kayaks if times are really tuff. But the answer to your question is that ,I don't like to be passed, for one thing, and the pursuit of the extra couple mph has always kept things interesting. I do appreciate your point of view.If things go wrong,I'm sure it will be one of the first things to cross my mind. Leaving well enough alone has not been my specialty over the years. Any how thanks agian, but I could not resist the opportunity to poke fun |

Gps 72 mph pretty much all it had 4600/4700 rpm. My thoughts we're that a pair of super chargers would net about 200 hp per motor ,and hope that would give me 10 mph (would love 15 mph,but I know it's a heavy boat).

smaller props will give you a few mph. read my earlier post.
I can see where a 3 blade would let me pull a few more rpm/mph. I dont have any spares ,so I guess it's almost mandatory to try a set right!! I would hate like hell to spend my last pennies on super chargers, and come out with 4 -5 mph !!! More than likely will run the boat a couple years and try to turn it for some thing a little larger. 33- 36ft what ever goes fast. |
Where Id spend the money-
If you put blowers on that block youll get a most one more season out of it. Bolting on blowers without going through the rest of the motor is short term gain followed by a long term headache.
For 10K heres what Id do- A Real exhaust system- or higher end manifold based system A set of AFR/Brodix heads combined w/A more aggressive cam Holley 1000CFM EFI, or late gen single plane manifold with Demon carbs. You may be able to find most of these parts used- Do all these, pick your combos well, and youll be at about 550HP (just a bit more than what my 406 my small block makes ) Someone already mentioned BBLades I agree or Hering van spin you up a thinned out prop & a workover. And where will your drive suffer? Do you have external steering or not- If not youll hammer 1/2-1" of play into the bravo 1 gimbal in about a season- go grab the skeg tonight and lift up--- if you can feel more than about 1/4 inch of play its already worn. Definitely go for that extra MPH- its what performance boating is all about. It must take alot of HP to make a 28 Apache run!!!, my speedo read 82 before the motors went, and I only had around 450 HP, my speedo must have been off by alot:rolleyes:, I cant belive the power it takes to make a Apache 28 run!!!

IMO, if you're looking for big speed, apache aint the way to go.
BUT if you're looking to spank any boat in big water, it is the way to go. Also imo, 10k doesn't go a long way with twins. If you gain 5-6 mph that'd be alot. As they say, "speed, cheap, reliable, pick any 2". I dig this line. :D "The answer may be a 17/18 foot hydro stream or allison with a big ass outboard,so I can scare myself every now and then!!!!" |
