Apache 28 Brave Questions
 

I have a few questions for you 28' owners. A post in the General Discussion area by Dreamer got me thinking about the 28. I talked to Bobby last summer and he told me that the boats had come down in weight due to some new techniques and materials. If I remember correctly 5000-5100 lbs was what he said. He said that a single BB in the new step version would go just fine (70s), it was no longer necessary to get twin BBs in it. Does anybody have feedback on the newer versions of the 28 and how do you think it would perform with a pair of small blocks, say a pair of Scorpions or a pair of bored/stroked SBs. Just thinking out loud (or in type I should say), if the boats performed well with the 454s, the new small blocks are the same power if not more, and have considerable weight savings. Thanks...Steve

Steve, I would think that it would work good with the small blocks, also they are much lighter and use no wood and with the step it should fly. I'd like to take one for a ride.:) Ike.

Thanks Ike...I'd be inclined to do without the step at this point. Being an owner of a step hull, I'll forego it in my next boat. I haven't had any problems with it, but then again, I stay away from radical turns. I figure it'll still fly...step or not. Blue Lightning Marine is close to me and they'll probably build the engines for my next boat. They offer a 400ci/500hp SB that should make any boat boggie with twins.
I think you have a 28' right? How does that boat run compared to say a 30-32' boat in the rough stuff? I'm sure there aren't many 28's that can hang with it in the rough (watch the AT fellas chime in here :D ). My next boat will most likely be a Pantera, Powerplay, Apache, AT, but I've never seen a 28' Apache in person. Looks like a real beauty though. Just looking for some real world feedback on how it runs...Thanks, Steve

Steve the 28 handles rough water extremely well. Hot Boat magazine did a test on one and said it carried itself and felt more like a 35ft boat. When you drive the 28 it feels much bigger because of its 8.6beam, high freeboard and high deck. When I bought mine it had stock 502's and ran 77mph on gps, not bad for a 7500lb dry boat before fuel,pass,and extras. You really should drive one before you make your decsion. The pantara and powerplay are also good choises.
