28 Apache - what to look for?
Getting semi-serious on a 1989 Apache 28. Boat has 1993 vintage 502's and Bravos. What should we look for in terms of problem areas? And how does the Apache stack up against, say, a Cig Bullet or the 28's from Active Thunder, Pantera, or Powerplay?
Thanks in advance! |
Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
Built Like A S*#t Brickhouse And Heavy, Will Crush Snotty Water But Can Not Compete With The Speed Of The New Stuff. Active Thunder's 28 Is A Great Product. It Now Rides On The Same Bottom As Their Proven 32 At, Has A Deep Cockpit, Big Cabin, And With A Single 575 Will Spank Anything Else In Comparison!!

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
How big is the cabin on the 28 apache?

This one? Looks nice!

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
Pretty big cabin. Only problem is the bed is about 2" short for me. So of your over 6' then you have to tuck in a little. I'll try to find some pics.

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
CFD5 is there any difference in the decks on an 89 vs. 90. Do the boats look the same? Do you have a 28 Apache? What would the speed be with twin 390's? How much does the boat weigh? CFD5 are you on the Cincinnati Fire Department? I am a Columbus fire fighter.
|
Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
I do not think there is a difference between the 89 and 90. I have a 1990 28 and love it! All of the 28's I have seen have the same deck. There are some later model Cherokee 28's that Froberg built but I'm pretty sure they are the same also. Mine has 454 mags, 365HP and runs a solid 70 on GPS. I spin 24P 4blade bravos to 5000, I heard that the 28 will pick up a couple mph with 3 blades. Going to try some this summer. Yes, I am a Cincinnati Firefighter. What part of Columbus are you from. I met a couple Columbus guys a few years back when they came down to work during the Ocsar Armstong funeral. Great guys and we really appreciated the help.

Its good to see some honest Apache 28 owners in the speed department. I have a 91 and I am pretty sure that all of the 28's, even the last Cherokees were the exact same dimensions. The boat is an excellent rough water boat. In rough water, it will kick the Sh*& out of an Active Thunder 28. Smooth water is a different story as the AT weighs about 3000lbs. less. The 28 Apache rides like a 35 foot boat. To get serious speed you need to add power. I have posted a pic of mine. For the right price, they are a great value. I love mine.

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
No doubt about the rough water in an Apache. Could not believe how solid it is. This years Lake Cumberland poker run was the first "rough" water I had it in. Ran next too and passed a 38 baja. The Baja was all over the place while we were just cruising along. My buddy ITTLFLI yelled over "you realize we just beat a 38' boat in rough water!" Obviously could have been the driver of the Baja as I doubt a 28' boat can really run with a 38 footer but impresive none the less. Heres a pic from that weekend, looks like the same deck as mleslie's

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
cfd5 , craig223 has a set of 25 mirage in the classified.
just passing it along in case your looking. i posted awhile back i was running 75 gps. that speed was achieved in californa but not here in missouri. elavation difference maybe. it wasnt because of salt water because it wasnt used in salt water. i got my own gps over the summer and the best i could get was 72 @ 4800 rpm's in light chop w/25p 3b mirage props. tryed some 4b 24p bravos and got 70 at 5000 so were basically running the same speed. really like how the bravos pulled though  im going to try some hydromotives this spring. ill let you guys know how she does. bigboat28 , buy a membership. its worth it!!!!!! your missing pics of some beautifull boats. |
Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
There is no 28 any tougher/better built than a Apache....Period.

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
Steve H, The bravo's do have awesome pull. I have heard theat the 25 3 blade would be best for my boat so I hope to try some this summer. A friend has a set for me to try so I will keep Craig223 in mind, thanks. I would think you should be turn a bigger prop. I only have the 365HP 454's and pull the 24's to 5K easily. My best speed to date is 71.7 on GPS. That was cool day 60* and 4 people on board. You have 502's and should run mid 70's. You gonna try to make it to Cumberland next summer?
Birdog, Still in Florida? How's the Gun running? |
Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
yes we really want to visit cumberland. some friends of ours went last year and said they had a great time. do they have the poker run every year?
|
Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
Yes, every year. Last years was the weekend of Sept. 11. Great poker run.

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
Guys,
I may be in for that one. We could have a (28") War Tribe get-together. Mike |
Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
I'm always in for that Run. The only other Apache I've seen down there was a newer 28 Cherokee. Let me know and I can help planning hotels/houseboats. I'm only about 3 hrs from LC and spend alot of time down there.

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
Wasn't there a nice 28 with twins for down in the cumberland area for sale last year? A 28 just went up for sale in wisconsin on boat trader, it has been for sale thru that dealer at least once before, looks pretty good. I was looking for one of these 10 years ago and they were going for the same prices back then, amazing. Gota love a toy that holds it's value for that long. Steve

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
Nykamp I called on that Apache in Wisconsin a week ago. I am in Ohio about 12 hrs from there. He said that the boat is in really good condition. I to saw it awhile ago on boat trader for sale. What can you tell me about the boat? Have you seen it, if so what condition is it, tears in vinyl, scratches, patches in fiberglass, any stress cracks? Thanks for any info.

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
Had some folks look at the 28 in Michigan - apparently it is very rough. Could be a good project for someone, though. I don't have the time or money to deal with a major overhaul...

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
Dockrocker you had people look at the one in post #4, is that the one that is pretty rough? I just talked to the guy and he emailed me some pics, looks good in the pics. Anybody else know about this boat? Thanks

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
Bigboat 28 I have not seen the one for sale in wisc. I know it has been for sale a number of time over the last few years. PM saber 28 I understand he looked at it in 1998 or 1999. He looked at it first hand and it doesn't sound good from back then, alot of time has gone by so it may have been fixed up nice by now. These boats are very hard to come by, as Bobby puts it no one wants to give them up. Good luck, shopping, Steve.

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
Steve or any body else, have you seen the one in post 4? What condition is it in?
Dale |
Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
The only 28 I looked at was the one I bought. I talked to the guy in Wis. about the 28 up there. White w/ yellow arrow. PM Saber28, he looked at it and can give some opinions. If you can find one and it is in decent shape, buy it. They are awesome boats. Not the fastest but very solid and a great rough water boat. The guy I bought mine from did not move much on price either but I loved the boat and basically bought it over the phone. Paint on mine is "different" but I have grown to love it and it's nice being the only one out there that looks like mine. Mine is in storage for the winter, but when it warms up a little I'd be glad to show you it and go for a ride if you want.

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
Dale the one in post #4 is here in Grand Haven, I saw it sitting at a car lot last summer and got out and walked around it and it looked pertty good. I also saw it in Key West last spring. I looked at it because it is painted Identical to my buddys 36 APACHE in wisconsin.Get a hold of dockrocker he had 2 guy check it out for him. Steve

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
the boat in wisconsin that i looked at had yellow arrow feathers on the side and was totally beat. plus the guy, pat bentley was a total fuxxing liar. i cannot believe i actually drove 7 hours to look at it. cfd5 and i had a good long conversation about it.
dont waste your time with it :( |
Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
Thanks again for that Saber, wasn't sure if you wanted me to post alot of info about it but our conversation turned me to my current 28. I am not a fan of bad mouthing boats in public online but if you do your research, you'll find the right boat. Bigboat28, PM me whe you get a chance.

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
The one with blower motors is sold, and the one in powerboat listings the phone # is no good. Boy these boats are hard to come by, the single engine one was Eric's old race boat I bellieve. Steve

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
Hey you guys, talked to the dealer that has the boat in post 4, this is what he has told me. The boat has a brand new interior done by cigarrette, the motors one is new 0hrs the other 50hrs., and a paint job done in the last year by somebody in New york, and everything on the trailer just replaced, bearings, brakes, etc. Does this sound correct from you guys that have seen the boat. Like I said above the pictures he sent the boat looks really good. He said that they took the boat in on a trade on a 35 Cigarrette. Any info? Dale

Re: 28 Apache - what to look for?
if its the one in West Michigan I'd pass....
