gel coat blisters

Any body here have problems with the gel coat on there Baja blistering? My neighbor bought a 03 23' and it blistered by mid summer.Baja says its not covered because he is the secound owner. He spent 2500. to have it recoated and now it is starting to blister again. The guy who did the work said he should not leave the boat in the water, this is why it is blistering. Does not sound right to me.Any ideas???????

3 of my buddies that have BAJAs all have blisters, big time. They are left in the water summer months. None of my other buddies boats have this issue. Other makes.

Any boat left in the water for months at a time runs the risk of blistering! Some are going to do it faster than others but given enough time most all are going to eventually! It is just not a good thing to do with a major investment like that but this is only my opinion!

I leave mine in the water from May till October. So far no gel coat blistering at all. I know that with age and prolonged exposure, water will begin to impregnate the gel and fiberglass. But quality of materials and build process makes a difference. Also, I've heard that if the paint is Clear Coat / Base Coat it is prone to blistering from prolonged exposure to the water. It could be any of these.

If you do that with a painted boat it is almost guaranteed to blister! You can sometimes do it wth gel for awhile but eventually it is going to take it's toll and when it does start blistering it is very hard to get it to stop. Gel is porous and always absorbing water (some at different rates) but when it finally makes it through to the fiberglass underneath you are going to have big problems! The longer you leave it in, the more you are gambling! I have just never been all that lucky gambling with a large sum of money! I need to be sure my boat lasts so I don't take the chance!

Re: gel coat blisters

2003 blistering, I'd say NOT NORMAL! Baja and other brands were subject to major Blistering issues due to poor gelcoat (Vinylister) quality. From what I eared, since 2001, they all upgraded there gelcoat with a more dependable product. The only thing I can think of a 2003 with that problem is bad preparation and gelcoat process... Not sure about the warranty... Does the warranty covers blistering in the first 5 years? My opinion : They did something wrong with that boat and they should stand behind their product period! Dam#$n shi#$t! it's a 50 000$ + toy

Yeah Right!

Gel Coat is Gel Coat. Leave it in the water and you are asking for problems.

I would say three to four weeks is TOPS. I never leave mine in the water over one week, and that is only if used on a vacation.

It does and it WILL blister.
