New to powerboats...steering question?
 

I use to have a wakeboard boat and just got into powerboats. Bought my first one....1998 Baja Outlaw SE. However, I'm not use to the steering on these boats. When you are going about 10mph through slow zones, is it normal for these boats to sway left and right so much? And when I steer to correct its like if I'm over-steering! Any advice? Thanks! :D

Welcome to the board and welcome to the Baja family.

There is nothing wrong with your boat. That is normal especially with a true deep vee hull and single engine setup. The ONLY single I have ever seen that did not do that was a 29 Fountain.

The best thing you can do is point your boat where you want to go and let go of the steering wheel. It will wander to port a bit, then it will come back and wander to starboard a bit.

If you try to correct it you will just make it worse.

Sell the single & get twins. Then you can put on drive in gear & the other in neutral, then repeat, then repeat, then repeat, then repeat.
What you are experiencing is "normal" like Dock said. I found it was best to just let it do it's thing to a point then correct just a little. You will get the hang of it & congrats on steppin up.

I have no Idea what the heck he is talking about none of my boat have ever done that......... :rolleyes: ...........Youmust have a bought a lemon.........I could take it off your hand for about 10K........

Oh yeah drinking will definetly effect how the boat steers. See drink Chart

0-1 the boat will be all over the place

3-5 it will steer perfectly straight

7-10 it will appear to be going straight but it will really be all over the place


Congrats on the offshore boat if you make adjustments to correct the steering make them very slowly and half of what you think you need to. :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink:
