Interesting Thread
TeamBajaMarine
http://www.teambajamarine.com/forum/...read.php?t=298 A guy with a nice "FAST" Baja called me today laughing his head off at this thread over on TBM. He does not post hardly at all anymore because of the mentality of some on these sites. I had to go look and it is a shame that people will not accept the facts. There has been a lot of brain washing by smaller dealers in my opinion. Especially ones that do not have Mechanics on staff certified to work on the blue motors, and find a need to bad mouth them and push the black motors. Personally I have found the 500EFI to be the most reliable engine that Mercury as ever built in my opinion. You get out of a motor what you put into it, regardless of color. What is you opinion? |
Re: Interesting Thread
The only bad thing I have to say about
the blue motors is the $$$$ I've had 2 sets......it would be hard to go back to black. On my HP500's, I had the valve spring problem that occured during a certain vintage.. That was the only hiccup I had with either sets. ( now, the drives are another story) |
Re: Interesting Thread
I personaly think an engine is only as good as the person servicing it. I tend to agree that if you take care of what you have, keep it serviced and don't abuse it, any stock engine should survive many hours of use. I would not hesitate to go Blue in my next boat if the cost allows it. I would love to own a 36 with blue motors one day, that is my long term goal.
Funny you point out that thread Dock, I sent a link to that thread to a buddy of mine with 500s in his older Fountain that he has many hours on without any problems. He got quite a chuckle out of that. |
Re: Interesting Thread
The only thing I know of the 500's is the carb version has had many valve problems. My brother-in-law has drop a valve once and had a valve seat crack and drop. Just this past weekend my buddy floated a valve and the keepers fell out. But again these were both carb versions

I agree with the other statements, how you care for your boat is what gives it it's longevity (atleast in most cases). The only thing that would scare me about blue power is the additional gas money! :D |

Re: Interesting Thread
I'd kill to have my 500's back. The 496HO's are nice but don't have any midrange compared to the 500's in my 33. It's the only thing in my new 36 i'm not thrilled about. Would love to add the Raylar kits but bought the 5 year extended warranty.
C'mon 2011. |

C'mon 2011. How do you compare the 36 ride to the 33? just curious what your opinion is. |

It seems to be not as nimble as the 33 turning and it takes more time to come on plane. You can really feel the extra weight. More freeboard in the 36 and it rides somewhat smoother although the 33 rode great in big water. I really like the looks of the 36 much better. I know its basically the same boat but the 36 is much better proportioned. The three feet is all in the nose and it looks more "offshore" than the 33. I also like the McCleod seats better than the Aero Bolsters. I think they should be standard in the new 35. The Aero's make the Cockpit in the 35 look cheap IMO. |

Bret:
Just a factoid that might have you and others think some more about the Raylar 103 - 525kits. We now have over 200 of these kits are on stock 496Mag's & HO's worldwide and not a single engine failure yet. Some of these kits have been in service now about two years and in some cases a lot of hours. Even though extended warranties are good, two or three years of what you think is subpar performance and lack of excitement might be worse! Another 10 mph or so will certainly get any performance boater excited. Just some food for thought for those on the "fence". Ray @ Raylar |

Not yet , kinda wish we had time now for one, but we're just busy trying to keep the 496 program on track. Maybe this comming year we'll get something put together. Ray @ Raylar |
Re: Interesting Thread
Are my 525SC's considered blue or black? :D 'Cause I'm rebuilding 'em after 100 hrs

Re: Interesting Thread
Sometimes those "Blue" motors can beat you up pretty bad hence you get "black & blue" in the wallet which will most of the time leave you in quite a "blue" mood! Ah you'd just waste the money on something else anyway!

Re: Interesting Thread
I agree the "blue motors" are built good,if I was buying a used boat and you could find a good deal on them it would be worth paying SOMETHING extra but they are not magic, just built well. You could EASILY duplicate them for less than 1/2 the cost. I would NOT spend a extra 20 or 40 thousand on them on a new boat unless you just wanted a little faster boat and re-sale was your main concern. I build my own motors though and have competent machine shops that can do top-notch work, plus know where to buy parts without getting screwed. For the average joe-blow who wants to just change oil they might be just the ticket or these poor souls who I keep reading about that know just enough to get in over their head and end up having their motor in and out of the boat and back to their local machine shop countless times, but not me,Smitty
