38 Special Questions
Hey guys - This site rocks FYI :P
Anyway, I just picked up a 1995 38 Special with 525sc's. It's a pretty heavy boat because it's got all the goodies like the generator blah blah blah. When I bought the boat the guy claimed it would run 75 to 78 GPS- My GPS is on the way but for now I have had trouble even running 65 on the stk speedo - I know this isn't a good way to tell the speed accurately but I figured it would read a bit higher. Also, it feels like 60-65 ... I have no real expectations on speed but I would like to see what it should run or some other opinions. Also, does anyone know what the props were stk on these boats from Baja ? It has four blades now.. I don't think they are OEM CB |
Re: 38 Special Questions
that is not a 75-78 boat.
I would guess mid 60's with that setup |
Re: 38 Special Questions
Had a friend with a 99 model loaded out with 502 Mags.
It ran 65 MPH all day long, and rode GREAT. With the 525SC's I would guess maybe 70 MPH on a good day. The 525SC's were good motors, but they did not make a lot of horsepower. Depending on the hours on them they may be ready for a rebuild which could also explane some power lose. |

I have new CPR 502's :evilb: in my 95 .38 Special and it gets 65mph with Ruben driving trimmed to the hilt..
However,, the AC will cool it down to 70 degrees almost as fast... :drink: |
Re: 38 Special Questions
A friend of mine has a 97' that has 525sc's
that have been modified to approx 650 hp, the fastest I've seen it was about 74 gps. It takes a ton of power to move these things, but they do ride nice in the rough. |
Re: 38 Special Questions
My 2000 has 502's.I also have all the goodies.Best that i have seen is right at 65 on GPS.I am turning 24-4 blades.

Re: 38 Special Questions
Tom (The Wet Spot) was seeing about 61mph with his which includes all the goodies (gen, a/c, etc) and that was with 454 Mags (385 HP) and Bravo 3's. These motors and drives have since been replaced with some carb motors that were producing around 700hp on the dyno so it should be interesting to see how fast he is now!

I would say he was bs or didnt know how to drive or something wrong, I think they run that range with ho's or 502's |

Re: 38 Special Questions
i know that it takes about 740hp a side to run 84......worked for a dealer years back that did one. boat did not have have a genset. they are big heavy boats that like to bow steer. the more that you can get the bow out of the water the better...
