What have I done now?!!?

I got stupid today & bought a set of Whipples for my 29 Outlaw. Seems it doesn't have to be sold afterall. :evilb: How fast do you suppose it will go now? 454 Mags (385hp versions) What pitch propellers do you suppose I'll need & should I freshen up the engines? They have 400 hrs.

Re: What have I done now?!!?

Do a compression test first. If numbers are even around 150, then read on.

Valve jobs on the heads, single angle for rapid heat dissapation. Get the combustion chambers in the heads polished to remove rough spots that cause detonation. Have the exhaust ports smoothed out. Use Fel-Pro MLS head gskts. Use ARP studs for heads. Make sure to get air/fuel ratios set correctly in the computer mapping. Have fun !! I have done many Whipple set ups with no failures, so ask questions if needed.

Smitty

P.S. Figure on between 12-15 mph increase over stock. If you have 1.50 ratio drives I would say start with a 32 pitch Bravo 1. You'll be in the mid to upper 80's

Re: What have I done now?!!?

12-15 mph! That is what I'm talking about. The only drawback to them are they are the side mount Whipples. Guess they are not as "good" as the top mount systems, but what do I know? I'm also glad to know I guessed right on 32" wheels.

did you buy the yellow set in the classifieds?

Re: What have I done now?!!?

I actually have side mounts on my 509's and Dustin claims the intercoolers are more efficient because they don't get heat soaked by the motor. I have some more advice for you. If you want them set up right, ditch the add-on fuel pumps and injectors and have a custom program done as I did. If you want give me a call over the weekend and I can explain in more detail what needs to be done. It will cost some more cash, but the setup is cleaner and will actually run better and make more power.

Everyone has a weak moment.

Now that will make for a very nice winter project for sure.

With 400 hours I would freshen the entire engine and put good top end hardware and head gaskets on.

Keep us posted!

I'm thinking the aluminum Edlebrock heads like the 525efi motors have would be a nice addition also.
My plan is to re-ring it, slap in some new bearings & have the stock heads freshened up. I might get weak again & go with new aluminum heads but that is another $3k for shiney stuff that I don't really need.

Re: What have I done now?!!?

I'm running those Edelbrock heads on my motors. In stock form they flow terrible on the exhaust side, and that is not good on a blower motor. I had to spend $$$$$ to get them ported correctly. If you have the cash aluminum heads will make more power and also make the motors live longer. They pull out some heat from the cylinder if you are running higher boost numbers such as me.

Hawkeye had a 29 w/385's and prochargers.

Had 32 pitch props.

As I recall it was a tick....just a tick :D faster
than my 29 w/HP500s

Tick

Tick Tock

A tick is exactly 1.3 MPH I think?

Re: What have I done now?!!?

Definitely go through the engine. Good head gaskets is a must. Once you get everything installed, write down every modiication that you made and send them along with both computers for each engine to Dustin Whipple and he will get the computers right. I had the same setup on my 25 Outlaw except I had the 502 efi.

Make sure you have sufficent fuel to both engines, by upgrading the fuel system.

Have fun it took me about two month's to get our's dialed in correctly. You probably will be in the 30-32 prop pitch.

Smitty 11-03-2006 02:19 PM

Re: What have I done now?!!?

Don't bother Dustin with the computers. Besides he is doing R&D only now. Two guys can set up the stock Merc Mefi comps to do what you need. Tyler Crockett in Michigan and Mark at Precision in New Orleans. Best way is to dial them in when they are installed in the boat. I'll be talking to you this weekend. :drink: :drink:

Whipple is still in business. As a matter of fact they are building a better product.

just havent heard much lately about them, Is the support there?

They are very much still in business. As a matter of fact, Art Whipple, the founder is now in charge of the marine side of things. Very knowledgeable and easy to deal with. I just talked with him a few weeks back to get a replacement side mont charger for a customer of mine.

Smitty, got any side shots of the Whipples installed? I'm worried about clearing the Dana exhaust.

I think I would be more worried about the engine hatch ram. I friend of mine put the side whipples on 454 in a 302 and had to remove the ram. Yours might clear or worse case, have to be relocated.

Mabey some of those fancy Dana hinges???

Re: What have I done now?!!?

I'll see if I have any side shots. I just moved my ram forward to the seat bulk head. It works fine.

What you will need to do next is save $10,000 for new Outdrives. I have many friends that are running whipples and love them but they have problems keeping XR's together so I know Bravo 1's won't last....

His are only 454 mags. I think the drives will hold up, you just have to be MORE careful at takeoff and airing it out.

That doesn't sound like much fun either. I will try to controll myself.

I'm running a procharged 572 (1078 hp) w/a Bravo 1 in my Baja. went all season w/out failure, Just apply the power easy. and limit the wave jumping.

JaayTeee 11-20-2006 12:46 PM

Re: What have I done now?!!?

A friend of mine has a 98' 36 O/L w procharged
502mpi's, little over 400 hrs, regular bravo's.

He had his first drive failure this last summer.

Mine, on the other hand ( 575SCi's w/XR's)
have had issues with both sides.

My 29 O/L w HP500's had regular bravo's
and about 400+ hours and no problems.

I really can't badmouth the regular bravo's.

Smitty 11-20-2006 01:13 PM

Re: What have I done now?!!?

You should be fine in the 29. Weight has alot to do with it. Make sure to run synthetic drive oil and change it every 25 hrs.
