Y-pipe gone on the starboard engine, and getting everyhting cleaned up ready for paint. Hopefully if the weather cooperates I will be ready for the engines to be installed in a couple weeks.

Very nice looking upgrades on the trailer, they are all very good ideas. What brand of tool boxes are those?

I got them off of e-bay then cut them to fit the trailer.

Man, that is going to really look nice, but WOW, what a lot of work.

I have to tell you that the 420 is my all time favorite Baja. It was huge in many ways when Baja built that baby. I have done a lot of Poker Runs where 420 showed up and they look as good as ever.

I am ready to start a winter project...but I would liketo make sure it is one that can be finished before the winter is. Has anyone on here squeezed cmi headers, or any other aftermarket header in a 29 OL. What do you think the gains would be on 496 HO's? I can't decide if this is worth the time and money or if they will even fit...but it sure would look sweet. Anybody out there do this?

Custom Touch & I have Danas on our 29 Outlaws. You are right, it is a tight fit. I'll dig up some photos or you can do a search here, in the Baja forum for "Dana."

The cmi's will be worth it just for the sound:drink: , I put them on my 25 and it made a big diff on sound but not much for perf, if any, mabye a little mid range, and i lost my capt call

They are suppose to fit.

They do work GREAT with the 496. I have not seen any other engine package where headers make such a noticable difference. About 40 to 50 HP! I have a friend that picked up 5 MPH in a Sunsatation just with the headers and a prop change.

They are a real pain in the A$$ to put on. When I saw all the pieces that come in the kit it was enough to make the average guy send it back for a refund.

Plan to spend a couple of long weekends. But it will be worth it.

So how does she run with the headers (how fast, mags or HO's, props, etc)? Looks awesome!!!

Thanks, I would come over this weekend, but I have a small problem I have to take care of. The engines are not in the boat and spring will be here before you know it. The ladder and the new tool boxes are going to be worth a lot.

I would rather put engines in than do that welding and cutting of the tool boxes...:D

Runs great with the headers...Has a great midrange punch and the sound is just awsome. I am also running my corsa quick and quiet so I can go silent...
I have 496 Mags with out headers I was running 26 pitch props and getting 69 GPS at 5000 RPM's...

With the header install im running 72 MPH with standard 28 pitch props and 4500-4600 RPM's...

I still need to dial in the props. Thinking when that is all done should be about 74-75MPH.

When running 72 that was with a full tank of gas and gear and 4 people.

Highest speed was 74 GPS alone with 1/2 tank of gas.
Happy with the results and would do it again
Any other questions please feel free to ask or pm me...

Very cool!! Sounds like you need to lab those 28's and pic up a couple 100 rpm's and you should be in the sweet spot. Andy (Whole Lotta Love on TBM, Beak42 here on OSO) has some labbed 28's for sale that have the "baja cup" that might be a perfect fit for you if you're interested.

Re: Winter projects for the boat, lets see em'

Thanks everyone! Just got back and seen the responses.

Jason,
What kind of gain did you see with the exhaust? You are running juiced up 454's if I remember from our conversations in the past. What kinda sound and money?

30 Outlaw,
That looks sweet! Did you have to pull the motors to get them in? Was it difficult to keep the Q&Q option? Did you put them in yourself? As a side note have you ever tried labbed 27 mirages? I got 77mph on GPS this summer with them at about 4900 to 5000 rpm. I also bought a set of Mercury labbed 26p Bravo's for Lake Erie (in rough water the 3 blades break loose real easy) and was hitting the limitter hard and seen 73mph. The 27's might be a nice fit. If you ever get over this way I would let you try them if you like.

Doc,
It's only time and money...isn't that your philosophy? I would share that approach... if only I had more of both : )

Liquid,
I forgot to ask you why you had to loose the quiet option?

JasonSmith 01-25-2007 09:55 PM

Re: Winter projects for the boat, lets see em'

I wouldn't call them juiced up. Just have roller rockers & some tuning work done to them. I gained about 3 mph if I rember right.

sorry for the delay in the response. I did not have to pull the motors. I had my dealer put them in. Keep in good contact with the mechanic and there were some issues with the brackets and screws. Cmi took care of everything though.

I did however do the install on the Q&Q what a pain. Ttook me 5 hours  That's only one motor... I had to cut my down tube on the Q&Q 1 inch because they were hitting the Y tube. Just a lot little things. In the end, all in all Im happy with it. Just waiting on my other Q&Q setup for the port engine.

As far as the props... I have not tried a 3 bladed prop. I might have to take you up on the offer if im in Ohio...

Dude, that is awesome. VERY nice job.

Blewbyyou 02-19-2007 08:49 AM

Dave-01,
Very nice handy work. Did you make the white plastic doors yourself? Are you interested in selling them when you change the other side? How much did you have to shorten the seat by?

dogghouse 02-19-2007 10:36 AM

I would be interested in buying a pair of those doors also.

dave-01 02-19-2007 12:22 PM

The door idea came from someone in the Baja forum, I don't remember who...It is 1/2 thick starboard which is available from west marine or online (google it). Make a cardboard template, trace it, cut out with jig saw. Sand all edges straight and smooth and then use a router bit with a 5/8 to 3/4 radius. If any edges are rough after routing you can sand smooth using fine sandpaper, comes out nice.

dogghouse 02-19-2007 03:23 PM

Thanks....Where did you get the hinges and lock from?

dave-01 02-19-2007 03:42 PM

Here is my project, MitcherT painted it this fall and it turned out great, the picture isn't the best because it doesn't show how the blue turns to purple or the ghosting effects and the 3D. I still have to get the engine hatch done to match the new paint and the dash. But it's all coming together ;) JB
