I don't think you HAVE TO do a rebuild, but definitely do a leakdown test and that will tell you more. Then you may only need to have the heads refreshed and then rock and roll.

at how many hours would you recommend the leak down test? and what is the cost of freshing up the engines?

do a leak down , if it passes change the valve springs or do a complete job and run it, Those motors should go 800hrs if taken care of. cost will vary , have someone with a good track record help.

Do a leakdown test if over 200 hrs.

Merc Racing recommends spring replacement and new head gaskets with a leak down test @ 250 hrs. If no other problems exist then around 500 hrs you should count on a rebuild. Rebuilding stuff that ain't broke is much easier than stuff that is.

The 250 hour thing is on non efi engines. They recomend 400 hours to do the valve cover pull and check the heads. They had problems with pre efi engines.
