Baja sport 220
 

Hi I am looking at purchasing a sport 220 with small block and Alpha one dirve. Is there any info I should know about this style baja, it is a mid 80's boat. Also any on here had/have one? What kind of speed can I expect with this boat?

My Dad had an 86. It had a 454 Mag on the Alpha drive. It was a good boat. Pretty much got me hooked on performance boating.
The boat should run in the low 60's with the small block power.

Jason, do you remember how much room you had on the boat? All I really want is enough room for myself and 3 friends, also a night stay in the cuddy for the wife and I.

I had a 88 220 sport with a omc king cobra (what a mistake) the omc that is, 460 ford. One thing to consider it does not handle rough water real well. I believe it has a 20 degree dead rise.

Yeah I figured the hull was less than 22 deg rise, if it is 22' by 8' . I would love to find a 24' or larger boat but I only have $6000 cash, and the 220 is right in the middle, plus it has a small block in it ( I would rather have a 24' with BBC) so hopefully the fuel milage won't be that bad.

I live in the downriver area of Southeast MI so I will only be on the Detroit river and the occasional trip to lake St.Clair.
Also most of the time when it is nice weather the river is pretty calm. I have been searching on this site and every where else for about a 1 year looking for 24' or lager boat that is ready to go but this boat seems like a good deal. I just can not go another summer without a boat.

I hear ya on the OMC I have seen some nice Four Winns Liberators for sale and every one has the OMC equipment. My Father inlaw is a marine mechanic and advised me to find a boat with I/O Merc or Volvo power.

I bought a 220 Sport new in 1988. Custom ordered it, 454/ Bravo, picked colors, guages, interior etc. It was a great boat, very solid but the ride was harsh when the wind kicked up. Cabin height is pretty short. It was fine for what I used it for...but I never spent a night in there.

Looking back it was probably the best boating investment of my life, ran it three seasons and sold it for 2500 les than we paid new! Sold it for a new Sport 280, twin 454's. Loved that boat too!

Looking at the pics, I see there's no trim tabs. I had installed a set of Bennet Sport Tabs on mine. It made the boat ride much better when the slop kicked up. They are very light in the nose.

Biggus, Besides wet sanding, polishing, buffing and waxing, putting some trim tabs on it is at the top of my list. I will be picking it up next weekend. From my inspection on the boat it looks to be in good shape. just needs a lot of detal work done to it. I plan on posting before and after pics of the work I do on it. This will be my first boat I have ever owned so I am sure you guys on here will be seeing plenty of me asking questions.

The owner told me that the trim sending units are bad on it, I had no idea what he was talking about, but thanks to OSO I click on my friend the "SEARCH" button and BAM!!, all the answers I need. I love this site looks like plenty of helpful people with plenty of knowldge. Thanks guys for all of the input on this thread. ----Brad
