30 Outlaw w/twin 6.2 speed
What kind of speed for a 30 Outlaw with small blocks? I gotta figure the weight savings would be a definite plus, and the speed loss would be offset by fuel saved...
Thanks, kernsy |
I'm going to guess mid 60's. I know of a 29 with 6.2's that runs mid 60's on our lake, and it runs quite well. My 30 with 496's (375's) runs an honest 72 on gps. I don't want to say this too loud but my boat is really not bad on fuel as one may think. I guess with everything it's all how you run it. Of course, I'm comparing to my 25 O/L which had a Merc HP500 Carb, which really drank fuel.
I know people shy away from 30's with small blocks but I don't think it's a bad idea, with today's fuel climate. And I'm sure a deal could be had on one. Just don't be afraid of the mags, as they really are not as bad like I said. Good Luck, hope this helps. |
I dont think the 30 would be bad at all with small blocks. Its the resale side of it. most folks are looking for the fastest--AFFORDABLE boat.If you buy the small block boat...It seems we all have faster itis.....Most likely any money you dump in the engine is no value to the next buyer and may shy actually them away.
Just a example....no revalance to real $$$$ Used 30 OL with 6.2's 85K vs used 30OL with 496HO's 95K. You could easily dump 10K in the small block and still not run with the HO's. It all comes down to personal prefence. There are plenty of us that started with a 272, then 29 or 30OL then 35 or 36OL. Its just in out male testosterone:D |
I agree 100% with the thoughts above - I think you would have a very hard time selling a 30 OL with 6.2's.
I am somewhat looking for a 30 OL or 302 and I wouldn't consider anything with 6.2's. |
The Baja dealers all have little black sales books with the speeds, and I believe fuel consumption. From what I have seen the books are pretty close to reality. I wouldn't expect much fuel savings by running small blocks on a 7000 pound (or thereabouts) boat. It's not like a car where the engines are under light load.

I know of one with a notched transom that ran right at 70. It was the only on made and it is the reason the 35 ol has a notched transom.

I don't think I would buy anything from National boat sales in OH. :hitfan:
