Lake Winni is fairly shallow. If anyone wants to run "BIG" water come to the Chicago Poker Run guaranteed to be big or ask any of the E Dock guys who were there last year.

Thats a fact. I've topped across 4 footers in my 42 at Lake Conroe but only ran it about 70-75. I guess I could have gone faster but didn't want to.

Depending on frequency and spacing that ride in Lake Cheney in a 29 foot boat was either stupid rough and dangerous, not bad (wide spacing), or did not take place at all.

Sounds like a good ride JS, glad it's running good for you now. Keep it together for the Poker Run in July!

For all you Jason haters, here's the proof. After Jason and I had left chuch and spent the morning feeding the homeless, we ventured to the lake and I followed him with a video camera. Its kind of grainy so the Baja may not look like it does in the avatar, but that's just because of the spray on my lense. :D

any lake can produce big water, I've been in 8' on texoma, coulda been a tornado, 80-90 mph wind, and 5-6' on lake ouchita in arkansas, Texoma is commonly 3' on the main body

socalstone 06-25-2008 03:17 PM

I've seen waves on Lake Norman... must've been 10'ers.....
Ran full speed. The faster I went the smoother it was!

I didn't read all the post but I just found this thread. I was in the 38' and for the first and ONLY time I got soaked head to toe in my boat and that includes shootout weekends at LOTO, fun runs, lalala. I also grew up in Florida and started working on deep sea fishing boats in the Gulf of Mexico at the age of 13 and worked on offshore oil boats off of Morgan City, Louisiana after high school. Those were damn well 4 footers and probably some big ones thrown in. As much as I hate to vouch for that sharp toothed POS JasonF'nSmith this one is true. Cheney Lake was rated to have the second or third highest average wind speed year round of all lakes measured. That's average wind speed 24 hours a day seven days a week! As far as the 92 mph I can tell you when I spottted the people in the water and slowed down Jason ran up the middle between my boat and those in the water and it looked nearly as fast as I've ever seen it go. The three people in the water had been in the water for hours and until I came within a couple of hundred feet of them they said it was so rough they could hear boats but had not seen a one. Did Jason mention how flustered he gets trying to throw a folded life jacket into the wind when our buddy is in the water with his built in defibulator kicking the sheet outta him?

Aftermath after a rough day back in june or so on Texoma

cfischer 10-29-2008 03:19 PM

I just read this thread and I would have to say no way on those speeds in 4ft waves. I know inland lakes are different but on Lake Michigan the waves are really tight and I used to own a 28 Cigarette and go out in 4 to 5s and there was no way I broke 40mph unless I was going down the wave. I am sure your boat is very fast but my boys with the 38 cigs and 41 Sabers are lucky if they break 80 let alone 90MPH in real 4ft waves. People's perception of waves are way off in alot of ways. Here is the wave forcast for tonight and this weekend on Lake Michigan in Grand Haven and there is no way you would be running that fast in those waves.

Dock Holiday 10-29-2008 07:17 PM

I don't know he has convinced me that they were 10 footers!:evilb:

I will give him this:

That is one very rough inland lake.

We were all lucky it we hit 75MPH.

drpete3 10-30-2008 12:35 PM

Its hard to jusdge in a photo. Those look like 2's in the pics esp if you arent paying attention to how much air those boats are getting.

I was in the yellow boat and out of 100 boats only 14 of them made the afternoon run because it was so rough. Trust me those boats are not going to get that much air in 2ft waves. Ask anyone that ran the run that year and they will tell you how rough it was. In a 29' boat in 4ft waves the boat wouldn't be in the water long enough to reach those speeds let alone a Baja that is a very light boat compared to most. You would spend majority of the ride in the air which would be fun and your arm would be sore from throttling so much but no way running 90 plus MPH.

Also anyone that loves to boat in these waves will tell you they look smaller in pictures and video but when you are really in them they look pretty big!!

socalstone 10-30-2008 01:50 PM

agreed. I think it comes back to how people measure waves.
He either "thought" he was in 4'ers but were actually half the size.
or.... it simply didn't happen.
or he was dreaming it happened.
or perhaps just a fish story.

I understand. Not saying these werent 4's esp considering the air but just saying it doesnt photgraph well.

Also, again to clairfy, 4' waves are actually 8' in height because you you dont measure from trough to the peak. Ill see what i can find as far as a diagram goes.

drpete3 10-30-2008 02:12 PM

http://www.sciencescope.co.uk/images..._of_a_wave.jpg

when we are on the water and experiencing waves we are obviously experiencing the entire wave from trough to the peak which you can see from the diagram above would be equal to 2 times the amplitude. When waves are reported they are only reported by their amplitude. therefore when Jason says his bow is out of the water 4 ft and they come over the bow these would be approximately 2 ft waves. Again because the boat would be sitting in the trough and the peak of the wave is coming over the top. Now I wasnt on the lake and didnt observe the lake during the 90mph runs so I cant say they were or were not. I am just trying to clarify how a wave measurement is defined.

So, I am confused a little. When we were in the poker run and the wave heights were 4 to 5s, then how big were they really???

Tempest38 10-30-2008 03:40 PM

When I was refering to wave height I was refering to the WHOLE wave. That is what you see and feel. Nothing was said about number of feet above "normal" water level. When you see a wave it is from trough to crest and that is height I refer to when I say wave height. My 2cents FWIW.

I am with you on this. You can see the forcast for Lake Michigan and it will say 3 - 5'. You can barely boat in that. Second to last time I went out they were calling it 2 -4'. Hardley anybody out in it. I was out crushin some when a 32' Sunsation came out. He went about 1/2 mile then turned around and headed back into the channel.

I just wish I could have had someone on the pier that day takin video. I was getting some major air out there. When I came back into the channel people were looking at me like I was crazy, I was having a ball.

We were in bigger water than that. The waves were way closer togather & not as sloppy as those pictured.
We were also the only two fools on the water besides the kids that were ejected from their boat like T38 mentioned.
There is some fish story to the speed but it made for a good thread.

Hot Stepper 10-30-2008 06:41 PM

The great lakes kick up way more than four footers and yes they will be rollers too. But depending on mother nature and the wind direction those 3-4 footers can be rode across like a flat highway in a Viper at 150. I made a trip form Harbor beach to port sanilac (30 miles) lake huron north winds at about 25-30mph. looked nasty but did it anyway. better half wasn't feelin well and laid in the back seat, 1/4 way through the trip she gets up, I slow bown to an idle and felt like I was in a washing machine. Describe the situation to her, until we get over 30ish its going to feel like a buckin horse in the rodeo. after that don't worry. The waves were real short and choppy 3 -4's first set of longer rollers we came across, I remember her grabin the Ohh chit handles, only to look over at me with those eyes of how did you did that. we could have left the bolasters up and set down for the ride. other days it could be the total opposite. marine forecast 3-5's get out there and it's 4-6"2 with the occassional 8-12. Yeah the great lakes can be just as bad or worse than the ocean. Have'nt done the ocean but I can claim all five great lakes:drink: and servivied some rough chit. Port Huron to PIB 5 hours return trip 13 need I say more?
