Questions about a 502 mpi vapor locking??

I have a 2001 baja 36 outlaw with 502 mags mpi, bought the boat last august and starting to have, I think vapor lock problems. It seems to be getting progressively worse. any help or things to check would be appreciated.

Keep your fuel lines as cool as possible. The 502's for some reason were worse then others about doing this. The fuel system in down low in front of the motor and it gets hot. I had a friends install stainless steel braided lines and they were even worse. If that has been done in your boat go back to black rubber fuel lines. Also the fuel return goes back to the pump and hot fuel in reintroduced to the motors. You can return the fuel back to the tank and it will help solve the problem.

Learn where the Schrader Valve is and how to use it in case they will not restart. It is under the plemium and looks like a valve on a tire.

Last open the engine hatch when you are stopped and let the heat out.

Good luck

Merc has a vapor lock kit to fix the problem. Call Brett at PBC with your serial numbers (402-464-4791), I've put them on two Baja's I've owned - the 454 Mag's and 502 Mags both have this problem. After you put the kits on you will never have this problem again.

Thanks for the info. Is the kit for both motors or just one??

You need a kit for each motor, it's plug and play pretty easy to install if you have done some wrenching.

Yep it is and a frustrating problem to diagnose and then convince a seemingly intelligent person his fuel is evaporating in a standard boat. The kit works a treat

My 2000 will do it if I go for a hard run then stop with out putting the blowers on.

If I have any kind of an idle time after the run it starts just fine.

Turn the blowers on, crack the hatch,,, idle for a bit ,,,,, or any combination of the above and I bet it goes away.

I am new to the site, I have a 2000 29 with 454 mags and I am having a similar problem with one engine.

What does the kit consist of?

I run my blowers continuously while my motors are running, just in case.
This year, whenever I come down to idle, or shut it off, I open the hatch for a little bit to let some hot air out.
So far this year, I've had 0 problems with vapor lock. I don't even have the plastic cans around the water seperators any more. Too much of a PITA to put on.

i too have had the dreaded vapor locking symptoms in my 502mag...however, after posting on here and everyone saying to buy the kit to fix it i found out that in fact mine had it already.....what i ultimately ended up finding out after many days of pulling my hair out is that my mechanical fuel pump itself had a gasket fail internally and let raw fuel into the sealed area...this caused my oil inside to basically be worthless and gave no protection....the arm inside had worn down some where the cam makes contact with it and didnt have quite enough fuel pressure to pass the vapor lock. i ended up putting a new mechanical pump on the boat and its ran flawless since.
