Looks good! Glad to see you back on it slacker!! :)
|
...My Albatross...
Installed the stbd main stringer a couple weekends ago, been grinding trying to clean up the old glass. Found another small section of coring (about 1 sq. ft) that had a dry laminate and allowed water to migrate through to the core, cut that out and replaced with new. Working on the bulkheads now, hope to have them in this weekend. http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...00303-2232.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...00303-2231.jpg |
Looks good! I have been meaning to call you and see what you have been up too
|
Still at it...adding ribs between inner and outer stringers. I added one more after this pic, for a total of four under the cockpit floor on 18" centers, with the last one at 12" to bulkhead the fuel fill hoses.

Floors are in...roughing in bulkhead to go all around the hull and support the deck.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...00421-2252.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...00421-2252.jpg |
Doubling up the balsa where the full hoop bulkhead will go. Vacuum bagged, should be ready to do the bulkhead when I wake up today.

Damn that looks good

Nice looking work!

Thanks for the comments. If I had put it back together the way it was, then I'd probably be done with it. But decided to change things around, add some seats in the cabin and an extra bulhead. All of the horizontal peices will be balsa that I vac-bagged on a table to try to keep the weight down as much as possible in the cuddy. And I think I probably spent two days getting the stringers/ribs level to keep the floor level, got it to within about 1/16th of an inch on a 6 foot straight edge so I figured that was good enough.
Also made a flange all the way around the fuel tank so I dont have to screw the floor gas tank cover into the stringers. I don't want anything getting screwed into the main stringers unless it absolutely has to. Some things I'm sure I went waaay overboard on, especially for a 20 year old boat, but I figure its a good learning experience and this probably won't be the last one I rebuild so why not. Should be a freaking tank when I'm done with it. |
Sidetracked on motor work on Sunday, fine tuned, sanded and rigged the bulkhead pieces yesterday, glassed them in tonight.

My vacuum bagging rig. Found the kit/directions on www.veneersupplies.com, got the pump on Ebay for 60 bucks. Worked out pretty good, instead of running constantly and having to throttle the pressure, now its like a Ronco, I set it and forget it. As long as I keep the leaks to a minimum it cycled sproradically just like it is supposed to.

Still at it, almost done with the cabin:

Just read your whole thread...GREAT job! Keep it up and don't compromise..you will have one well built ride you can be proud of...congrats!
|
Awesome job. Hope I can get as good as some of you guys on here someday. I love seeing people put the time in to do these boats the right way.
|
Nice job, how are you planning on finishing the cuddy?
|
C_deezy,
Bring that boat down here to Baja country when your ready for the interior to be done. We are only 1 1/2 hours from Toledo, so you could visit the progress every other day if you wanted? Looks like it's going to be pretty custom, even for the seating, and we will get it completed faster than anybody that I know of. I will get you a quote that you just cannot pass-up on to boot! XT :ernaehrung004: |
Thanks for the comments.
XT - Hopefully that is the plan, probably not this summer but maybe over the winter. Cockpit could use some new skins as well. All in due time... I grew up in that neck of the woods, parents still live in Galion. |

Did you end up using epoxy or vinylester?
|
Vinyl on the transom, then switched to poly and glad I did.
Usage so far is: 8 Gallons of vinylester ( lost about 2 due to non-use, they turned in the bucket) 7 - 5 gallon pails of polyester, about halfway through number 8 but hoping I don't need another one. |
Uggh. Still toiling away....
Bilge - Bilgkoted: http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...00719-2135.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...00719-2134.jpg http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...00719-2137.jpg |

looks great Brent! Now lets put it together
|
Awesome thread and project! Thanks for taking the time to post.
|
Sprayed the cockpit tonight. Brushed the black gel on for under the seat, then sprayed the white. Mixed a little more Duratec in than normal and it seemed to help level out on the floor. Have to sand a few spots where some junk mysteriously fell out of the sky but other than that it turned out pretty good.

Wow!!!!...awesome work man...you can't be married my wife would of divorced me by now if I took on a project like that..LOL...baja should hire you to build there boats! Thanks for all the posts and pics.
|
Still going at it. I put re-gelling the outer transom off as long as I could, finally had to do it a couple weeks ago. The red is close, probably won't be able to tell from 10 feet away but not as 'red' as the existing. Probably should have tried to find a closer pigment but figured it's close enough. Still need to wet sand and buff, probably today or tomorrow.

Working on gauge layout. Panels are made from fiberglass, once I'm content with the layout I plan to have aluminum ones laser cut. I had one cut for another boat awhile back, I just hope the dude that did the last one is still doing them!
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...00907-0007.jpg Began wiring yesterday and the day before. Trying to keep everything accessible once the helm is bolted back in place: http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...00909-0359.jpg |
Damn that floor came out nice!!!!!! did you get my text over the weekend?
|
Be sure to raise the x dim, I went up 3" with mine. I set my propshaft centerline at 5" and the boat still planes right off with a mirage prop. Gained about 3-4 MPH and better ride, less trim, ect....

Sounds like you are on the right track. Be sure to get ahold of the fixture to drill the holes and mark the cutout.

a friend just rasised his sutphen from 4 3/8'' to 3 3/8'' its a straight vee like the bajas and sabers my saber will be 3'' with a box. he was out last week and his bow ran nice in the chop and in 5 to 8s it flew level, this was day after the storm came by cape cod ,I have pics posted in the sutphen section under knot right its short those are off newport and I'll post more on fairhaven pokerrun in the northeast section so you guys can see how nice his boat rides at that height. I bet the ol 24 25 26s29s will run better at 4'' cause of the pad his is v. and you can always add a spacer. my road better with the shortie and I hope to have the saber which is a round vee like donzi 's have that boat was set at 7 5/8s or 14''x:eek:and the old owner tried a shortie and pick up 4 mph. with b1 props and 5 blades we can go higher and get a level ride boxer which is the sutphen 31 single was running better than a 33 twin boat that had deeper drives they were shooting in the air all over the place plus they were turning in a no no, good luck I hope to be testing in oct I need a new gas tank after rigging most of the boat out comes the motor, tank takes 3 weeks:eek:. later
