Fuel Pick-up tube in tank
 

I have a "99 29' Outlaw. I'm cleaning up the fuel delivery system. The motor's are carbarated and I use electric fuel pumps. I have in-line filters before the pumps and the fuel/water filters after the pump.

My question is this. Are the pick-up tubes in the fuel tank just stright tubing with no screen or do they have some sort of screen pick-up to keep out junk before it gets to the pump? You can see where I'm going with this, if I can eliminate the in-line filters before the pump I'd like to do that. If there is already screen filters in the pick-up tubes why add more screen and possible restriction to the system?

I did take the fitting off the top of the tank and took a look but could not really tell if any type of screen is there. The tube did not come out with the fitting so I think it is welded to the bung.

My guess is it's just a tube with no screen.

If you have ever taken the pet-cock off a motorcycle tank you'll know what I'm talking about. They normally have a plastic screen filter in the tank.

I know this is a whole different deal with a tank in a boat, but I don't see why not have a screen filter on the pick-up tube?

This may be a good question for the "Baja God's" but any input is appericated.

My older baja had a straight tube w/pick up screen in bottom of it. It was not a "fine" screen. It was about the size of a toothpick to go thru each hole.
Leave your filters in your system.

There are no filters or screens. Make sure you filter fuel before it goes to the pump to remove any debris, especially scale from the tank.

Thanks guys. Today I laid out the lines and mounted the filters. I was able to hide them pretty well so I'm pleased. Also feel better knowing that the pumps are protected.

I took the checks out of my tank fittings on my 29. They were hanging up & preventing fuel from getting where it needed to go.

Part of the reason I'm re-rigging the fuel system is that I could not maintain 6-7psi at WOT. I took out a couple of hard 90's and am replacing the filters.

When you say you took out the checks, how did you do that? Are they in the tubes in the tank? Is it some type of a spring loaded check valve? It looked to me like the tubes were welded to the bungs and could not be removed. While I'm at it, I would like to be sure anything in the delivery system is working right.

The checks are in the fittings from the tank to the supply hose. The ones (fittings) you took out to see down in the tubes.

I'll have to look closer at the fitting's but I thought they were just stright 90's. It's possible the previous owner already changed them out. Thanks, I'll take a look tonite.
