HP 500 carb???
 
I got a 98 36 FT Outlaw with twin HP 500's and carbs are prob needin a rebuild.. So Im lookin into usin jus a street insted of marine carb.. Thinkin like a 850 CFM Barry Grant with electric choke and mech secondaries.. Think usin a reg carb be ok, see alot doin it? :evilb:

if you are over 250 hours you need to replace the valve springs, I'd be more worried on those than the carbs.:ernaehrung004:

The value springs were a big problem on the carbed 500's in your year model for sure.

As for the carb itself I believe they are all pretty much the same you just have to have a Coast Guard approved flame arrestor.

It takes all of $50 to rebuild your carbs. I wouldn't want a choke on one either.
Your best bet is to just rebuild the ones you have.

I have 98 500hps as well , I had a leak down and comp test done last week and where all within 8% of eachother, how would i know if it has original springs or not? im not the original owner, I was told that they have been rebuilt, but you just never know. my mechanic did asked me if it has had a top end done, he said it sounded as though it did!, maybe im alright for this year.

I don't think their is a way to tell, with out replacing them. Maybe a phone call to the mechanic who did the "rebuild".:ernaehrung004: many of them can have a broken inner spring and be running fine, compression OK, and its still a broken time bomb.

If you change the carbs, be sure you have the "J" tubes in the top to spit fuel into the engine if/when a float sticks. Also be sure you have the vac port for the hose to the mech fuel pump diaphragm chamber. When the fuel pump diaphragm leaks, the vac line sucs the fuel into he carb.
You never want spilled fuel in the bilge. Stick with the marine carb and beter yet simply rebuild yours to get a baseline. They are set up for that motor anyway.
