29 Outlaw depth finder question
 

Being the lazy f that I am I ask this question.
Can I mount the through hull transducer in a different location? The one I have finally died......last year....early.
Anyway, I can't get to the old one to get it broke free without pulling one motor & taking off most of the accessories including the supercharger. Not a fun job.
Can I mount it opposite to where it is now or does it have to go in the "hole" that is there now?

Wherever you want to put it, you need to eliminate the balsa coring, or any air voids to make it work correct. If you are real good the way to do that is to take a 3" to 4" holesaw and start a hole where you want to locate the transducer. Make sure the center bit is less than 1/2" longer than the holesaw blade. After you start cutting the hole, stop and remove the center bit and cut through the balsa with only the saw blade. You can tell when the blade hits the lower fiberglass surface. Pry-out the plug, and sand everything smooth, and make sure to seal the balsa with fiberglass/resin. We used Plexius to bond the puck at Baja, but you can use JB Weld, or something that makes a hard solid bond.

Well crap! I can't get to the floor to get a hole saw, sander or anything other than a magnet on a stick without taking most of the front of the engine apart.
I need a ferrit that knows how ro use tools or someone with arms about 6' long arms.
Maybe a 4' pry bar & hammer will break the old transducer out? Then I can use a dremmel tool to grind the leavins out.

I recently had to replace my transducer and mounted one externally ($65 from Humminbird). Scary to drills the holes, took me 6 months to muster up the CaHones....Now that it is done, works without flaw and good up to about 45mph. At that speed, what would one do if the depth went to 2' suddenly anyway????? With two drives back there, the one wire that goes up from the transducer above the water line and into the transom, just blends in. Two boats over 9 years I have always had a problem with through hull transducers.....

I had to replace the factory lowrance depth finders
in both by 29 and 33.

I just mounted them relatively close to the
old transducer and both of them worked ok.

Trim it up enough and you dont need no stinkin depth finder.

So in that same dimpled area will work just fine?

It was relatively close to the old transducer,
probably within 6" from it.

I am needing to replace my transducer too. Does anyone know the approximate thickness of the hull just in front of the engines on a 33 OL?
