Too much for this outlaw?

Hey everyone im new here but not new to boating. i have had a love obsession with bajas for most of my life. the outlaw imparticular. i have recent come on to some money and am going to buy one soon. i found a 1998 24 outlaw se. with 240 hrs. on her. the boat is in overall good condition however the rear engine cover is busted up. the hindge is rotted and the moter to lift it is shott. the guy wants 18,500 for it. no trl. is this to much? and not that this is a big deal but the decals are faded dont know if they can be saved. thanks in advance.

I would move on and look for something else. Normally when you find a couple of issues wrong there are more to follow. There are a ton of outlaws for sale, I would keep looking or try to shoot the price down more and make it more worth it.

Agree. Seems a bit dated and resale will be tough. You are only seeing some of waht could be many issues.

Hey welcome to the board and I hope you find a Baja that you will like and enjoy.

I agree with the above comments and would move on. There are a lot of nice boats out there at stupid low prices right now.

If any part of that boat was neglected then all of it was probably neglected. Sounds like one of those that you will have way more in it then it is worth in no time.

Happy shopping

will22 05-20-2009 05:07 PM

If you are still shopping around i have a very clean 97 24 SST with 255 hours i would get rid of (im looking to upgrade)...however i cant let it go near that cheap. if interested give me a call 615 872 2139 lv message pls. boat is white with the purple lightning graphics and matching trailer...freshwater only.

Baja_man 05-20-2009 07:21 PM

Keep walking on this one, there are much more lucrative deals than that out there.

Nightlife1970 05-20-2009 10:17 PM

baja 25ol would be the way to gofor that money

the 24s are nice I have one but if you can find a 25ol 98 or newer its twice the boat, thae dash set up getting in the cabin is a lot easier. the bad thing about the 24 is the back seat it does not give any support to the back of the boat, it screw and bolted in:eek:, with the 25ol its glassed in and supports the transom. you will see cracks in most 24s a long the corners of the transom and out side on the gunnels because of flexing. my boat had them after the 2nd year it was made and that was with 454 330hp. I went to a 502 in 93 then a 509 in 2000 with 650hp.right now I have my boat a part to design a new full bulkhead to fix that problem and I am going to a 1050hp motor.right now with this market you should find some 97 98 25ols not the 250 or 270es or what ever they call it with a windshield. the 250 ols could be high teens or low 20s, I got a friend with a 24 ol= sport 87 in nice shape in 2 yrs no bites he is down to 8000.00 if you really like the 24 better than theres a ton out there in the low teens stock power they will run in the 60s you need 500hp to run low 70s like 72 to 75 thats because the drives are deep in the water, I put on a 2'' shortie and picked up 8 mph with that and a carb change if you want I can tell you everything about them I have had mine for 20yrs now and to see it check out pics of my boat its on page two here these pics are from 06, someone stripped my boat that winter and I am getting it back in the water call me if you want art 617 833 3327. and make sure you have any boat surveyed before you buy it, its worth the 500 bucks a friend just got phucked for the second time in 4 years:picard1: he didn't do it again and is now unhappy they lied about power.:angry-smiley-038: call me art

that 96 there looks very clean priced at 15,000 with stock power is about right and 60mph must be a 330hp 454.

Viperbob 05-21-2009 07:57 PM

I think the 96 was carbed and had 300 HP IIRC. Think I remember this boat from Boat Trader.

OutlawJoe 05-21-2009 09:48 PM

so the boss 302 is too much at 28,000?

no but have it surveyed by a pro its like 500 bucks.

OutlawJoe 05-22-2009 06:08 AM

what are some common things to look out for with these bajas. any make or break points? (ie. cracking, noises, stupid problems that cost wayyy to much to fix??)

Nightlife1970 05-22-2009 09:49 AM

It's all common things to look out for on any boat. Is there rot in the bulkheads and stringers. Maintence on the drives and engines. Overall condition of the boat.

A 302 for 28k is a pretty low price. What motors does it have?

This boat is a 240, not an Outlaw. 240= sit down. Outlaw=bolsters

?

A 302 for under 30 is a deal, no matter what motors. Unless it's been abused.

OutlawJoe 05-23-2009 06:35 PM

it has twin 454s all stock but new risers starters and alts. the headliner is sagging and the silent choice isnt working. graphiics need to be done and interior carpets will probably need replacing in two seasons. but other then that a nice boat going for a sea trial soon.

yep not a outlaw its really a 22 ft boat with a built in swim platform must be a 240es?? a 240 sport were built in 87 to 89, then the outlaw can out in 91 with the wind faring, I think they skipped a year or two and pushed the 250sport, 250es then 270:rolleyes:, my buddies were 89s or 90s and came with the 250 stickers then baja change the stickers same boat they where including the swimplatform.

oldandslow 05-23-2009 08:27 PM

My 240 Sport has the same hull as the 90's 25 outlaw's

The 24 Outlaw. The 25 and the 24 are completely different.

3030hunter 05-23-2009 09:27 PM

I would say it is a 226ES which is 24 ft with the integrated swim platform. I just sold my 1990 to my kids. It is no where near the same hull as a Outlaw. It has a 21 degree deadrise and a Outlaw is a 24. Also, the 24 Outlaw and the old 240 and 25 Outlaws are completley different.

yep I think they change the 226es to the 240es, and the 240 sport 1987 to the 1997 24ol are the same 24 degree hull, with a small pad, the 1998 25ol is different with a wider pad and 24 degree hull, I have the newer ol faring instead of windshield, after doing a stuff which we did on sunday in a friends hustler 32:eek: I was a wet rat after that:eek:. he did not here me warn him when I saw the bigger wave 100ft in front of us, but did hear me yell this is gona hurt:evilb:, it didn't but broke his mj sunglasses mine my mj's I pulled off at the last second saved them.:evilb:
