K&N Arresters

Ok so im just wondering if anyone has anything to say good or bad about the K&N flame arresters? ive read they add 10hp to a 502mag with no other modifications but the arrester...any truth to that or is it just a couple hundred bucks wasted?

thanks in advance

It all depends on what hte K&N arrester is replacing. If you're taking off a rusted, oil filled arrester wrapped with a pair of Nike sweat socks... then yeah... you'll gain 10 HP... maybe even 10 MPH. But if you think you're gonna change an air cleaner and add 10 HP... try this before you waste your money... Drive the boat for 5 minutes with no air cleaner at all.

Good air filters for sure but even if they make 10HP that is only 1 MPH in a boat.

You will never notice a difference.

lol - no sweat socks or oil soaked rusted air cleaners, just the stock one thats in perfect shape. K&N themselves are the one saying it adds 10hp by changing nothing but the air cleaner...well actually i just recieved my Livorsi catalog and thats where i read it....

* Increases air flow over stock arrestor
* As shown, adds 10 HP
* This model is not for L29-310 HP engines

350 EFI Mercury FAEFI350 $99
454, 502 MPI Mercury FAEFI454 $213
496 EFI Mercury FAEFI496 $83
500 EFI Mercury FAEFI500 $111

FAEFI454 shown here with adapter & hardware

I put some on the 29 outlaw I used to have. LOOKS good but NO increase in power but did i say it LOOKS good?

Now if you're buying for looks... go for it. But don't buy a new one to make it go faster. That goes with this other list of parts that will not make the boat go faster...

Arrestor...
Valve cover...
Braided hoses...
Anything chrome...
Spark plugs with 4 tips...
Blue plug wires... (yellow may put out up to 1.5 hp increase)...

And the tricky, sometimes controversial list...

Drive showers...
Air scoops...
Nose cones... (under 70 mph)
Wind screens...

Let's turn this thread into the "What to buy for looks, not HP, but the manufacturer says it will increase HP" thread.
