29 outlaw/302 boss

Can someone tell me the difference between hulls like head room in cabin,is the over all hull depth the same with the same v .

baja29sandusky 07-14-2009 09:41 AM

I do not know the exact measurements however, having been in both styles and owning a 29 outlaw I can tell you I do not notice any difference. I am 6'-2" tall and have no issues being in the cabin. I have to hunch over a little to walk in there but I had to do the same in the 35' Fountain I owned previous to this Baja.

The 302 has more room in the cockpit and headroom in the cuddy with more amenities as far as galley enclosed head. The 29OL is more of a offshore look while the 302 is more of a European look to it. They both have the same hull length and deadrise with the 302 having a molded in swimplatform and the 29OL is bolted on..

Fasthawk,

I have a 302, usually spend every other weekend or so at Put in Bay in Ohio. Always stay on the boat and I have no complaints. I am 6'2 and have to hunch over inside the cabin, but for a 30 foot boat there is lots of room IMHO. The look of the 29ol is awesome, I love the swim platform and the windscreen. Most people I have spoken too about there outlaws miss the windshield. All personal preference. My next ride will be a 36 outlaw, once my 302 sells of course :Whatever: Either way, it's a Baja = great boats!!!

Dont mean to step on any toes, but I have a customer with a 302 currently,,,,, he sold his 29 outlaw a couple years ago and fell into this 302.

Both are very clean well kept boats, but he said he hates the 302 compared to his 29 outlaw.

again, just his opinion, but I would suggest driving both and making your own decisions based on your preferences !!

Why throw something like that out there without some details? Was it the extra cockpit space, or maybe the bigger cabin, or maybe it's the extra weight so it handles big water a little better with a 302. No, let me guess, it was the windshield that made him HATE the 302. WTF?

Owned a 302 for 5 seasons. Really loved the boat. The only thing I never liked about it was the swim platform (lack there of). I never liked the look of the newer bolt on ones. Couldn't find anyone to make an aluminum one at a reasonable cost.

Just bought a 29 OL and pick it up this weekend. Will be happy to share thoughts on comparisons if you're still shopping.

I like the 302 better especially with the extended swim platform.

However, this is a good deal and seems to be in your area if you are in OH:

Let me start by saying I really like both boats. I think they have a lot to offer as far as space, comfort and ride quality. In my opinion the most boat for the money in the 29 - 30' range. They can both be had for great deals right now.

After owning both now and getting comfortable with my new 29, I can say I like the ride and handle of the 29' better. Both are 1999s and equipped identically with 7.4s. The Outlaw is faster. It also does not have a tendancy to porpoise as the 302 did. My 302 also would list a little to port. I would have to trim the drives seperately to flatten out the ride (not a huge deal).

I have heard these boats share the same bottoms. I do not believe this. The ride is different in my opinion. The 29' feels better balanced. I thought the 302 felt like it had more weight in the back and didn't fly as well. The stringers, hardware and wiring appear to be "tougher", for lack of a better word, on the 29'.

I absolutely hated the swim platform on the 302 (not extended). I love the one on the Outlaw. I wish the Outlaw had the cockpit space of the 302. It's a noticeable difference.

Cabins - roughly about the same. 29' may be a little longer, 302 may be a little taller. I didn't have the galley in my 302 and never wanted it. I don't overnight much. Without the galley you can fit at least three more strippers down there!!:evilb:

Never experienced the listing issue mine does porpoise, but mainly due to the weight in the cuddy I'm guessing it doesn't allow the boat to keep the bow up...I'm having my bottom blueprinted and adding extension boxes with shorties this winter.

They do share the same bottom layout, but with the 302 having the built in swimplatform. I think you are correct in saying the 302 has more rear weight for what reason I haven't figured out? It seems to sit in the water deeper even when docked. I guess I don't see where the stringers are tougher, but maybe your referring to the engine mounts? I do have the HO's and hydraulic steering so alot of things are probably different and maybe design is different from 99 to 03?

I absolutely hated the swim platform on the 302 (not extended). I love the one on the Outlaw. I wish the Outlaw had the cockpit space of the 302. It's a noticeable difference. The built in swim platform on the 302 was a pure design flaw IMO should've designed it like the 342 or 272 or designed a bolt on one like the Outlaws. I have the extended platform and personally can't stand it, but keeps you from falling on the drives. The cockpit space is "alot" better in the 302 as well as cuddy space. The 302 is mainly a entertainers boat versus a "offshore race" boat.

Cabins - roughly about the same. 29' may be a little longer, 302 may be a little taller. I didn't have the galley in my 302 and never wanted it. I don't overnight much. Without the galley you can fit at least three more strippers down there!!:evilb:I notice a big difference in room in the 302 vs 29OL more headroom and more creature comforts, but if all your doing is sleeping in there or "playing with strippers" then both are about the same. The headroom alone is where I like it I'm 6'0" and bending over all the time sucks!!!

All in all though you pretty much described the differences in 2 identical setups in different models..

Baja_342 09-02-2009 10:03 AM

Irishtornado,

I'm headed up your way this weekend. My parents have a place on St Clair (one of the canals on the north side off Anchor Bay). I haven't decided if I'm bringing the Baja or not. It's about a 5 hour tow with a 1/2 ton SUV and they already have a 21' Trophy center console up there. I may save some gas and run their boat for the weekend. Where abouts do you run around up there?

Tim

I personally wouldn't tow a 302 5hrs with a 1/2 ton period. I boat in Anchor Bay, Muscamoot Bay, and south end near Detroit River. Be careful if you in Anchor Bay or Muscamoot as it's extremely shallow if you don't know the lake you'll find the bottom real quick..Depends on weather who will be out. Muscamoot Bay is the partycove on the lake.

You going to Lake Cumberland Poker Run?

Baja_man 09-02-2009 01:42 PM

Irish...where will you be over the Holiday? Any where near Higgins?

Sadly I think I'll be working and if I do get home it'll be on Sunday, so too late to go anywhere. I'm leaving Wendsday for Lake Cumberland so no biggie if I don't go out. I'll have 5 days of boating down there.

It's an '09 Aspen. Actually pulls pretty well. Family has a place on Norris as well. It handles the southern KY, northern TN mts well. Going north is flat, but those roads in MI are so rough, plus having to go through Cincy, Dayton, Toledo and Detroit just makes for a long ass drive towing or not. I'll probably save gas and run the Trophy this weekend.

Not runnin the poker run, but may go down for the weekend. I'm going to stay up in MI 'til Tues or Wed. See how I feel after that. Usually a great turn out in Cumberland.

Irishtornado 09-02-2009 09:52 PM

I'm headed to Cumberland on Wendsday morning so look for me on 75 if your headed back...I'm not running the Poker Run either I'm just going down to party...Went last year and had a blast was only there for 3 days this year we're going for 5 quite a big group going so look for me on the lake..I've got a purple/yellow/black 302 with a windscreen. I'll be running with a custom 33OL, orange/blue/black 29OL , a cat , a 272 and a cruiser...We'll be at State Dock all weekend.
