Holeshot - single v. twins?
 

Just wondering what the difference would be getting on plane between my 272 and say a 30 or 33 Outlaw?

My 272 w/496, tabs 1/2 way down, drive all the way in, yanks the arms out of their sockets pulling up a skier. I usually don't even use the tabs to get on plane. Just drive all the way in taking off. Would the same be true with a twin powered boat??

272 faster out of the hole than the 30.

What pitch prop are you running??

Sounds like you are propped to pull skiers/toys and not for top speed.

If both boats are pitched for top speed, then the twin engine boat will win.

does 60-62 on GPS @ 4900rpms

Considering moving up to a bigger boat and wonder what I'd be sacrificing. Holeshot was the first ot come to mind.

I'd say the twin would pull... 5 skiers! way better with twins for hole shot !

Another thing that comes into play is drive
height.

If they're fairly high, it's pretty easy to
blow them out when coming out of the hole
if you hit it too hard.

Usually, the manufacturer, on twin engine
boats, doesnt put too much emphasis on
how they come out of the hole, they're
looking at how they work at cruise speed and
up top.

And on a side note, bravo drives just "love"
full throttle starts on big, heavy boats:eek:

I see no reason at all to have a fast / quick hole shot on a big twin engine boat. Actually it is more fun to me anyway to take off very slow and easy and come up behind the smaller / slower boats than to hop out front. That will also get you the most life out of your drives.

When you get over about 25 foot length on a single or any twin you are putting a lot of stress on the drives and related components doing a hole shot.

I have been on two fountains that were so over proped with high "X" dimensions that planning felt like it took minutes instead of seconds and many times they would blow out and you had to start all over again. But hey we went two miles per hour faster on top end!

The advantages of twins in a larger hull far exceed everything else that I would not be worried about planning time.

Seems to me in the off-shore/performance boat world there is no such thing as hole shot!
The concept doesn't even exist in the boating world unless you are talking: towboats, small 15-21 ft performance boats, or PWCs. I have a 26' single and enjoy taking off gently and easing onto plane as well. Besides, there is plenty of time to abuse the drives on the top end!

Same motors, a 30 twin, will spank a 27 single, on taking off, hole shot and top end. Don't take my word for it, even though I have owned both, go drive one yourself. As for your comment of ripping skiers arms off, I hope you have a spare drive laying around your going to need it.:evilb:

I pulled a salom skier w my 29. ONCE! Bout drowned him but he got up! Wakeboarders NO problem.
Also he ownes the boat now
