Engine Lid cover is coming apart at seems...

So I have noticed that the engine lid cover as been slowly ripping apart at some of the seems. I am sure this is due to both walking on and UV rays. My next question is how big of a job is this for a local shop to do? And should all the stiching on the pad be redone? Ballpark on costs?

TWIN-SPINS 10-01-2009 08:25 AM

http://www.xt-innovations.com did all the baja stuff

Wayne take it to XT and have them do it. You'll be sorry if the local shop can't match the vinyl or they do a ****ty job. My 272 came apart and it turned into mess.

XT-Innovator 10-01-2009 11:21 AM

Baja Man,

Have it done right! Send me a photo and I will get you a good price. Baja did switch to a better thread in 2006, but we are using even better "Tenara TR" tread on anything that we repair.

I would suggest having the wood liner replaced as well. They're notorious for becoming water logged and rotting.

Is there wood on an '04 25 OL under the padding? I know there is fiberglass but not sure about the wood.

The fiberglass is just a shell...It's plywood under it.

On your 2004 there is plywood along the edge to staple the cover in place. Most models switched to a plastic "Prolite" material around 2006 that will not decay. Your's is probably ready to be replaced? The photos are of my 29 OL after only two seasons, and that is why we pushed to change to the higher priced Prolite material.

five cent worth 10-02-2009 12:39 PM

Mine is doing the exact same thing. More than the seems coming apart is the warping and wavy looking.

Thought about having my re-done as well.

bajarick 10-02-2009 01:53 PM

I had dave ( XTinovators ) do a 33 and
a 36 baja and it was a perfect match.
If you want it done right give him a
call.

Is it as bad as this? I hope not, but we can fix just about anything on the interiors.

Are you guys doing that one? Maybe talk him into a cockpit cover to keep the snow out!

No, I found those photos on ebay one time, and could not believe how bad the boat was treated!

Baja_man 10-05-2009 11:30 AM

No, mine is not as bad as the picture shown but I really do not want it to get that far either. The fabric is fine, no rips, just seems to be ripping at a few of the seems with the worst being approx 6 inches long. I really do not need new fabric just a re-stitch. Might as well have it all re-done at the same time. I took it to a local canvas shop just to get a ballpark and they gave me an estimate of $225 to $350. The boat is in getting winterized currently and am undecided on whether to have this done this fall or simply wait until spring.

jswfl09 10-05-2009 11:42 AM

We had the vinyl sunpad on our old '05 275 completely restitched and it came out great. We also had the vinyl on the bench seat replaced (only the white part) and it matched the other seats within a month or so. You would be surprised how good a restitch (with better thread) will come out when done right. Paid around $300 local for the sunpad which included them coming out, taking apart the sunpad, and brining back the restitched vinyl and putting it back on.

Baja_man 11-15-2010 07:52 AM

I still not have fixed this and want it done over the winter.

XT, if I drop just the lid off over the winter what kind of turn around time are you looking at?

I am not sure if I want to shrink wrap the boat with or without the lid on.

I say pull the lid now, and put the rest of the boat in storage. You can bring the lid down anytime that way, and you should probably replace the wood that is around the edge of the fiberglass tray while everything is apart. If you need it quick, we can do that, or if you want work-in the drop off, and pick up times, we can do that also. Winter jobs always seem to go better when your not missing any boating weekends.

Wayne, we could meet up and you could give me the lid. I will be driving down to XT in the near future when my interior is done, and I could drop it off for you... Save you the drive..

Let me know!

Just need to give him the go ahead on colors. I would say sometime in Dec or Jan at the latest. I gotta bring my boat up to Daves, so we could meet there or something.

Mine is almost off you can come get it and bring it to XT if you want. I should have it off in the next few days. Then I just need to find a weekend to get it to him. Sounds like he will have several things to work on.

KY might add a couple miles to the trip??? Will, I could get my buddy with his diesel Chevy truck to come get the whole boat if needed. :sport009: He is out of work with nothing to do.

Irish, I will be around all weekend but I have get togethers on Thurs, and Sunday. No problem on Fri. and Saturday.

Might be done on the 252 Islander that will be headed back to Cincinnati on the Holiday weekend also....

Sounds like I'll be heading to Bucyrus on Saturday then. I'll call you to setup time to meet with you.

Is it illegal to operate a golfcart in Bucyrus with a open bottle of Jager?

I'm scared to think what would happen if the whole boat was there for an extended length of time. i already have a payment on the thing i dont need two. I have some quiet weekends finally and am always looking for a reason for a road trip. It will be after Thanksgiving before I get it up there though.

Looks like it's going to be a turn and burn trip Greg, but I'm not opposed to a burger and a beer. I'll let you know what time I roll out up here in MI see if it fits your schedule.
