Looking at 36 Outlaws
We are looking to upgrade from a 25 Outlaw to a 36. What are your thoughts on the 36 with 496's? Also, what is a decent price on a 01' to 04' 36 in good shape? Anything in particular we should be on the lookout for with the 36 in those years (broken stringers, etc.)?

36 outlaw
I had a 2002 with 496 H.O'S and it was a dog far as speed 65 top!!The rest of the Boat was great. The only complaint that I had was no drink holder for the front passenger and no anchor compartment on the Bow.Great rough water Boat..I just sold a 99 with 525sc's,extension boxes and offshore package and it was a sweet ride..It would run middle 70's and I could tell the difference in the handling between my 2002 and the 99..Good luck...I have a 06 35 outlaw and it's a great riding boat and runs low 70's with 496 h.o's and has all of the goodies that the 36 's didn't!!!

I saw your boat. We have a deal pending, but it's in the early stages. Is it a freshwater boat?

I know of a 99 in Cedar Rapids that is in very good condition. This one will run in the 80mph range. It has merc 500 bulldog 540ci with extension boxes. The 540's were warmed over to push it up. Nice boat and is used at LOTO.

What is your budget??? I have a 2000 36 Outlaw that I might consider moving. 200 hrs on boat and only 50 on motors and drives. It's pictured on my avatar. Smitty |

If you are going to be OK with 496's, you wouldn't be interested in my boat. I upgraded power to blower motors and XR drives to handle the power. Runs in the mid to upper 80's now. |

We run it on Lake George, NY. Lift kept and inside storage in winter. Boat has all options, kick ass stereo, 2 covers, etc. |
If you are ok with the speed of the 496 s Id go with
them, they will last forever as long as you dont build them, just change oils and filters and have fun. I have 500 hp in my 36 and 496 s in my 33 and never had any problems in 640 hrs on the 496 s |
I would not worry about upgrading the 496's if you buy a Baja with those engines. Raylar has Baja customers all over the country with our kit upgrades and some now have over 400 hours on their 496 engines with absolutly no problems. Not sure what other "build up" types the other poster was talking about for 496's, but with over 700 - 496 engines out there running Raylar kits, I don't think reliability will be your issue.
Best Regards, Ray @ Raylar |
