Prop for Baja 29 OL?

I have bought myself a Baja 29 OL with 2x454(7.4L) MPI.
The only thing is that it hasn´t got the right propellers.
So I ask the oracle of OSO what would be the ultimate props
for this boat?

(Sorry bout my spelling, I´m from Sweden...):bigbird:

It makes a difference if there are 454 mags or not, here is a discussion on props using non mag motors, if you need some like new Mirage plus 3 blades i do have some available in 23p.

Thanks. What´s the difference between Mirage and Mirage Plus? I have Mirage 23p 3 blades. I dont know if there is a "plus" there or not.

jmeng 09-12-2010 01:57 PM

How does the boat do with the Mirage 23s? What are you looking to improve?

Irishtornado 09-12-2010 04:07 PM

7.4L 454's are 310hp or 330hp and most likely are ideal with 23p Mirage Plus props....I'd be trying to spin a 22p Bravo myself and if your shy a few RPM's have them labbed by Bblades...

What year is the boat? They raised the X dimension in 02 on all Baja's and started propping them with 4blades instead of 3 blades...

It feels like the engines doesn´t have to work at all. No problems with the acceleration but the topspeed is about 61 mph and I want to go faster. It feels like those engines has little more to give.

The boat is from -98. Dont know if they are 310 or 330. Have to look that up.

How many rpms are you turning at WOT? The 7.4s should top out at 4600 rpm. If you're hitting the rev limiters I would try a set of 25" Mirages.

Assuming they're EFI motors they are 310hp at the prop. The carbed 7.4s were rated at 300hp at the prop and 330hp at the crank.

Baja_342 09-13-2010 09:22 AM

You've got 310 HP.

Having a '99 29 OL and a '99 302 powered identically, I can tell you you are running right where you are supposed to be.

My 29 with 23" 3 blades I got 62 on GPS.

On my 302 I bought 22" Bravo 4 blades. Picked up hole shot and mid range, but could bump the rev limiters.

You may be able to lab a set of 24" 4 blades, but you'll not be happy with the $$$ - MPH result.

Get the hull in some good chop and you may pick up another couple MPH. In my opinion you've got a nice, economical, reliable setup. I wouldn't waste time and money trying to chase a MPH in that package.

Oki. Do you know how the mpg´s are in cruise/top speed on this rigg?

I never really paid attention. Of course we don't pay as much for gas as you either.

All black Merc motors where rated at crank...EFI gave it 330hp carbed 310hp

98 boat coulda been either way, but guessing it's efi..

Depends if your WOT ir just cruising...I'd say 100 miles you better be looking for gas. I ran mine hard for 90 miles and was sitting on E same fuel tank.

jmeng 09-13-2010 08:19 PM

I get around 1.5 mpg cruising easy. Made a 120 mile run last year (one way) running 42 - 45 the whole way and burned almost exactly 80 gallons.

If I remember right Merc used to put both numbers in the owners manual. Carbed 7.4s were never 310hp though. 330 at crank, 300 at prop... I think the efi engines were all rated at the prop. (502 was 415hp, 454mag was 385, etc). Been a while back though so I could be wrong.

Irishtornado 09-13-2010 11:23 PM

not trying to argue for sure, but I've always understood only blue motors where rated at prop..500's 470hp prop etc. 502 415hp at crank 496ho 425hp at crank

jmeng 09-14-2010 06:19 AM

Getting a little fuzzy but I think early 90's, everything was rated at the crank but Merc started publishing both numbers. When things switched from carb to efi I THINK they started rating at the prop. Then I guess went back to the crank with the 496 platform? Really up until a couple of years ago I thought my 496 mags were 375hp at the prop. Anyway, some google searches would probably clear it up since Merc definitely wasn't very consistent. I could be wrong, who knows....

Quinlan 09-14-2010 07:36 AM

My old 00 29 w 454 mags 385 hp went from 24 to 26 4 blade. Lower midrange rpms and better all around.
Might have lost a little off the WOT but after 700+ hours who can complain. O and now its 850+ and Still running strong.

I stand corrected....

Sorry for the confusion...guess I was misinformed all these years.

rumrunner29 09-14-2010 08:21 PM

My 1998 29 OL, twin 330 HP 454s, 23 mirage plus, 67 on gps with me in the boat and 1/4 tank o fuel at 4600 rpm. Gets about 1.5 mpg at cruise rpm.

Teo 09-15-2010 06:02 AM

What´s the difference on Mirage and Mirage Plus?

More "cup" on the trailing edge of the blades. Really helps add bow lift on the Baja's.
