242 6.2 versus 8.1?

A friend is looking at a 242 with 6.2 and 8.1 Mag. What kind of speed differences? Is the 6.2 been a good motor? What are some of your opinions on the two boats?

Thanks

Big block NO question

My neighbor/best friend has had a 242 with the 6.2 in it for about 6 years now. It's been a great boat with not one problem yet. It really depends on what your after I think. If top speed is your goal, I wouldn't recommend it. His boat is a solid high 50's boat on it's best day, cruise speed is in the 40s. It's great for just cruising around and pulling water toys for his kid.

Keep in mind how long you want to keep it if topspeed isn't your concern 6.2 will kill you in resale. Most people will choose a BB 9 out of 10 times.

I would think that 6.2 would drink more fuel than the B.B. at the same r.p.m.

like the old drag race saying there is no replacement for displacement

As much as I would like my ride to be newer, faster, bigger, etc, etc we all have a budget.

They're both good motors. I would let it come down to entry price. All things equal then go with the 8.1. As far as resale goes, I don't think the 6.2 would kill you in a 24' bowrider like it would in a 302 or 29OL.

8.1 all the way. The 242 is very heavy for it size. It weighs the same as a 275.

62 was the best i saw on wish o meter with 8.1. That was 3 blade. It was unstable and i had to use tabs and trim to control it. Switch to 4 blade and it was very stable but lost 2mph.

With 5 or 6 people, the boat was slow to plane with tabs down. It was better with 4 blade. I would like to think it would be worse with 6.2 as you can't turn the same prop. It needs the torque of the bigger motor.

I've never heard anyone say that they wish they had a smaller motor! I have a beefed up 454cu in my 252 and I see an honest 62 in chop with a labbed 23p mirage plus. I vote 8.1 all the way.
