We're moving forward on a purchase and I was really hoping somebody might recognize the unit. Thanks, Kelly |
I've been boating on Winni every weekend for 3 years and never seen this boat.

If anybody would know this boat it would be Greg at channel marine. They were the baja dealer on the lake until fountain took over.

That boat was the factory poker run boat when it was new. I also have a copy of the Powerboat mag. with it on the cover.

XT I'd given up on this thread after a couple of weeks with no real solid replies. The seller told me this unit was rigged for being the factory's poker run boat for early 96. He said it was on the cover of a powerboating magazine with a write up about the build and it's appointments but he couldn't find the box he placed the magazine into back then. He also said that although the motors show 525SC that they're actually the very first 575sc's shipped from Merc and were the only factory 575's placed in any vessel that year and didn't hit the mainstream until early 1998. I currently have a contract with the seller but have to wait a couple more months until they can get it out of indoor storage at the marina for a survey and sea trial. I scored this boat for a very good price subject to the vessel and powertrain surveys and the sea trial. Dave and Jay, thank you for finding my thread and replying to it. They completely vouched for everything the seller told me about the boat. I looked for almost 9 months for the right boat at the right price before ever sending an offer on any of the hundreds I looked at in person and on the internet. See ya, Kelly |
That is beautiful. I love boats with more than 2 bolsters! Congratulations (almost).
|
BTW - I'm only a couple hours away from there if you'd like me to test drive it for you in the spring! :evilb:

575's are fuel injected roller motors with larger 250 series superchargers & are 502" in displacement.
525sc's are 454CID, flat tappet motors with a 177 supercharger & a Holey Dominator 1050 carb. The 525 is a supercharged version of the Merc HP420. I believe they called is a "Cyclone". I'd venture to say dude is pulling your leg. |

I'd venture to say dude is pulling your leg. I had to take everything I heard from all sellers as potential Hogwash. This guy really came across as sincere and truthful and the folks I talked to at his marina seemed the same, but most especially the pic's of the boat showed well. I don't enjoy the luxury of deep pockets and had to search a long time for a boat I felt comfortable making an offer on. Everything in my price range was in the early to mid 90's. I'm hoping winter will break soon up there and I can fly up to see it in person. It's VERY nervewracking making a purchase of this size with only conversing on the phone and seeing pic's on a monitor. It's downright scary, LOL!!! A bud of mine looked at the pic's and said he didn't think that the blower's chillers were factory items on a mid 90's 525sc and that the claim of it being a 575 could be true. His advice could be taken with a grain of salt too. It's definately a large Holley carb but I don't know the difference in the look of a 250 -vs- 177 blower. Can you tell by the pic's which one it is? Thanks again to all you OSO members. You guys and girls have been a great source of quality information for me during my search. See ya, Kelly |
Those motors may be 575HP with the chillers, but they aren't "575SC" Mercruiser engines. Neither the 525 or the 575 came with chillers.
|
That is correct. The aftermarket chillers were added at Baja, and were suppose to add like 60hp? Husky, we got your PM and would love to help you make the interior updates that you mentioned. Buy the boat and my copy of Powerboat Mag. is yours.

XT I'd guess he misinterprated the info of his powertrain at the time of his purchase. It was a factory 575 from Baja but although warrantied by the boat mfg. it wasn't a Mercury 575 production motor. We had many in depth conversations about the boat. It was a very special boat for him as a buyer and me too. He purchased it in his late 50's to keep at the summer house to enjoy with his kids and grandkids. Now in his early 70's he's looking to downsize and I'm in the same postion he was with my purchase to enjoy with my family and grandkids. I looked at many boats but this one was special to me due to it's factory history (although undocumented) and his story of their relationship with the boat. I hoping for a great survey on the unit. Thanks again to all of you members, this site ROCKS !!! See ya, Kelly |
I vaguely remember seeing it up there in the early 2000's.

If you want a little more history on it, you may want to contact Bill (jr) Littlefield at Shep Browns (http://www.shepbrowns.com). Bill's family owned Chanel Marine back then and chances are either Bill or Jim P. sold it.

Balance tube. Acts like an H pipe on a car dual exhaust system. I've seen some on production boats like Cobalts with Volvo power. At least this is my guess...

I'm guessing that is has to do with noise control since it is attached to the mufflers. Cancels out the pulses from the other side similar to the non-selectable Corsa diverters that split the exhaust out the transom and out the drive. Idunno4sho.

I've always had my muffler shops place crossovers of a smaller pipe in my hot rods and muscle cars. These large crossovers made my exhaust very quiet yesterday on our maiden voyage. She's going to be a sleeper in the performance cruiser boating crowd get togethers. This worked out well for us because the girls could talk and we could hear the stereo even when it wasn't turned up super loud. It also helped bigtime in the ability to hear the blower whine in the upper rpm's. There was a awesome NorTec V hull fueling up across from us yesterday that was incredibly loud even at idle edging up to the fuel dock. I loved his boat but thought to myself that I'd go crazy trying to talk to someone at speed or listening to music in any boat with that much exhaust sound. I'll give the Captain credit, his resonance was music to my ears when reminiscing about my old 'Cuda with the built to the hilt 440. I never drove that car on a Saturday night to talk to passengers or listen to the stereo. I always drove it to impress people with the smokey burnouts when I engaged my line lock on the front brakes and the sound of instant acceleration afterwords when the starter dropped his arms to start the street race. What a phucking dumbass I was when I sold that ride. I've wanted to build another one every day since then. See ya, Kelly |
